2011-07-03 06:37:45 - Nksagar-Sagar-Media-Inc:Kvitova of Czech beats Sharapova to win Wimbledon title.Petra Kvitova won her first Grand Slam title on Saturday by beating Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 in the Wimbledon final, and then dropped to her knees in disbelief.
Kvitova was playing in her first major final, but it was three-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova that showed her nerves. The 2004 Wimbledon champion double-faulted six times, including twice to get broken to 4-2 in the first set.
The 21-year-old Kvitova is the first left-handed woman to win the Wimbledon title since Martina Navratilova in 1990.Using a fast-paced and well-placed forehand, Kvitova
did little wrong on Centre Court as Czech greats Navratilova and Jana Novotna sat in the Royal Box with a host of other former Wimbledon champions.
Kvitova kept Sharapova on the run with 18 winners, and never seemed to lose confidence despite being broken three times.Sharapova was the clear favorite entering the match. Besides winning the title at the All England Club in 2004, she also won the U.S. Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008.
Shoulder surgery in October 2008 slowed her career, but she returned to the semifinals at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 2008 at the French Open last month.
At Wimbledon, Sharapova had not lost a set heading into the final. But she struggled with her serve in the semifinals, double-faulting 13 times before beating German wildcard Sabine Lisicki.
Sharapova won the toss at the net before the final and elected to receive, perhaps because she wanted some time to get into game action before testing her serve.Whatever the reason, it appeared to be a smart move because she broke for a 1-0 lead as Kvitova missed three forehands.Sharapova’s serve was then tested for the first time in the next game, and although she only had one fault in five attempts, she lost four of the points to even the score at 1-1.Sharapova wasted her second chance at a break in the third game, but Kvitova didn’t have to a few games later.
With the score 30-30, Sharapova produced her second double-fault of the match. The third came two swings later.Trailing 5-2, Sharapova double-faulted again to open the eighth game. But she did manage to hold and force Kvitova to serve out the set.Kvitova broke Sharapova again in the opening game of the second set, with the Russian double-faulting for the fifth time to give the Czech a break point. The pair twice traded breaks later in the set, but Kvitova held to win the championship dish for the first time.
Wimbledon: Bhupathi enters in mixed doubles final
The Indo-Russian pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Elena Vesnina has advanced to the mixed doubles final of the Wimbledon tennis tournament in London. In a gruelling three-setter that lasted nearly two hours, the duo defeated the pair of Australia's Paul Hanley and Chinese Taipei's Su-Wei Hsieh, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. In the finals, Bhupathi andVesnina will today clash with the Austrian-Czech combine of Jurgen Melzer and Iveta Benesova.
In the Men's Doubles event, American twins Bob and Mike Bryan yesterday claimed their 11th grand slam title as they defeated the Swedish-Romanian combine of Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 in the finals.
Defending champion of Spain Rafael Nadal will play the Serb Novak Djokovic in the Men's Singles final today.

A Tibetan Writer Sentenced to 4 Years in Jail: Rights Group
TIBET: A Tibetan writer was sentenced to four years in jail last month after helping edit a magazine critical of the Chinese government's brutal crackdown in Tibet since 2008, said the International Campaign for Tibet, a US-based human rights group.
Tashi Rabten, the editor of banned literary magazine Eastern Snow Mountain (Shar Dungri), was sentenced on 2 June by a court in Ngaba in northeastern Tibet. He was detained for a temporary period in July, 2009 before his subsequent arrest on 6 April 2010.
"The banned journal was first published Tibetan language commentary about the protests and crackdown from 2008 onwards, offering a critical perspective reflecting a prevailing sense of despair and loss, but also a way forward," ICT said in a statement.
The rights group said, "copies of the journal were among books seized and burnt by security personnel at a Tibetan school in the Ngaba area in April, 2011".
Three other Tibetan writers who worked with Tashi Rabten in editing the magazine were sentenced on December 30, 2010, on charges of "incitement to split the nation." Dhonkho (pen name: Nyen) and Buddha (pen name: Buddha the Destitute), were sentenced to four years, and Kelsang Jinpa (pen name: Garmi), was sentenced to three years, respectively.
Some articles in Shar Dungri have been translated into English in ICT’s report "A Great Mountain Burned by Fire."
Tashi Rabten (penname Te’urang) was set to graduate from the Northwest Nationalities University in Lanzhou before his detention in April, 2010. He is the editor of the banned literary magazine, Shar Dungri (Eastern Snow Mountain), in which a group of young Tibetan intellectuals associated with the Northwest Nationalities University, known for their progressive and secularist views, wrote about the situation in Tibet following the 2008 unrest and subsequent crackdown.
Tashi Rabten and his fellow editors wrote in the introduction that it was “a sketch of history written in the blood of a generation.”
He also co-authored a collection of essays, titled “Written in Blood,” addressing the situation in Tibet since 2008.

PM : Higher judiciary not-within the ambit of anti-corruption ombudsman
Asserting that he has no hesitation in subjecting himself to the jurisdiction of Lokpal, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday ruled out inclusion of higher judiciary within the ambit of the anti-corruption ombudsman.Bringing higher judiciary under the jurisdiction of the Lokpal would be contrary to the Constitutional scheme of things, he said while voicing confidence that a national consensus would be evolved on the proposeed Lokpal Bill.
He told a group of editors in New Delhi that his Cabinet colleagues were of the view that bringing the institution of Prime Minister under Lokpal would create an element of instability which, at times, can go out of hand.
"I, for one, have no hesitation in bringing myself under the purview of the Lokpal," he said.Affirming that he was not saying "anything one way or the other", he said that the office of the Prime Minister was covered by anti-corruption Act in any case.
Any person holding this office was a "24-hour servant of the people" who can be removed by Parliament through a vote of no confidence. There were divergent opinions on the subject in the country, he said, adding that he would like to be "guided" by political parties.
Dr. Singh pointed out that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha and Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal, who had both favoured keeping the office of Prime Minister out of Lokpal's purview, had already given their views.

Gowda slams fuel price hike
JDS chief H D Deve Gowda on Saturday opposed the hike in prices of kerosene, diesel and LPG and alleged that the Centre’s action in reducing excise and customs duty was done to benefit oil companies.
“When prices of petroleum products remained stable at $ 90 per barrel in International market in the last four or five months, where is the need for going in for price hike?,” the former Prime Minister asked.
Mr. Gowda took a dig at the Centre for reducing excise and customs duty, which, he charged, was done to benefit oil companies to the extent of Rs 70,000 crore.
The government has not passed on the benefits of duty cut to consumers, he charged.
“While the Government keeps on assuring people that it will take measures to bring down rising inflation, it resorts to price hike,” he told reporters here.
Mr. Gowda reiterated that the Prime Minister should be brought under the ambit of the Lokpal bill and wanted the Centre to work out a mechanism to fix accountability of judiciary.
The proposed Judicial Accountability Bill will not be of any help in this direction, he claimed.
