Violence led to curfew in Kokrajhar district


More than 35,000 people of both Bodo and Muslim communities are sheltering in 37 relief camps as a result of the violence in Kokrajhar district and the death toll has also increased to 12.
Kokrajhar SP Jitmol Doley, said a fresh incident was averted last night by patrolling security personnel at Sarapara under Dotma Police Station where a group of armed miscreants indiscriminately opened fire in the area. However the security personnel retaliated forcing the miscreants to flee from the area.Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner, Donald Gilfelon informed 
that curfew in Kokrajhar district has been now made operational between 6 pm and 6 am. Further he has also appealed to all sections of the people to maintain peace and not to spread rumors.

 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that additional forces have already been rushed to Kokrajhar and more forces would be sent there soon. He said that Transport Minister Chandan Brahma is camping in Kokrajhar, while, two other ministers, Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Dr Nazrul Islam have been directed to rush to Kokrajhar to monitor the situation.


Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Western Range of the Assam Police, Surendra Kumar and several other police personnel including Addl SP Kokrajhar, Amarjyoti Kalita were injured when they were attacked by a mob this afternoon at Fakiragram in riot-hit Kokrajhar district around 3.15 pm today and the police had to open fire in the air to bring the situation under control.he DIG was touring  to prevent the incidents of violence in Kokrajhar from spreading to Dhubri district and after visiting Lakhiganj area in Bilasipara sub-division he was travelling to Sapatgram through Fakiragram when a crowd of around 150 people signalled his vehicle to stop at Udlabari.Gradually the crowd swelled to around 500 and they blocked the road.Mob started getting violent and started pelting stones at the police injuring the DIG and at least nine other police personnel.The police had to open fire in the air to disperse the mob and one of the ringleaders involved in instigating the people was arrested.
