India’s external debt stands at about USD 530 billion at end March 2018, recording an increase of US$ 58.4 billion over its level at end-March 2017. At end-March 2018, India’s external debt witnessed an increase of 12.4 per cent over its level at end-March 2017, primarily on account of an increase in commercial borrowings, short-term debt and non-resident Indian (NRI) deposits. The increase in the magnitude of external debt was partly due to valuation loss resulting from the depreciation of the US dollar against major currencies. The external debt to GDP ratio stood at 20.5 per cent at end-March 2018, higher than its level of 20.0 per cent at end-March 2017.

Major highlights pertaining to India’s external debt at end-March 2018 are presented below:

Ø  At end-March 2018, India’s external debt was placed at US$ 529.7 billion, recording an increase of US$ 58.4 billion over its level at end-March 2017
Ø  Valuation loss due to the depreciation of the US dollar vis-à-vis major currencies (viz., euro, SDR, Japanese yen and pound sterling) was placed at US$ 5.2 billion. Excluding the valuation effect, the increase in external debt would have been US$ 53.1 billion instead of US$ 58.4 billion at end-March 2018 over end-March 2017
Ø  Commercial borrowings continued to be the largest component of external debt with a share of 38.2 per cent, followed by NRI deposits (23.8 per cent) and short-term trade credit (19.0 per cent).
Ø  At end-March 2018, long-term debt (with original maturity of above one year) was placed at US$ 427.5 billion, recording an increase of US$ 44.3 billion over its level at end-March 2017.
Ø  The share of long-term debt (original maturity) in total external debt at end-March 2018 was 80.7 per cent, lower than its level of 81.3 per cent at end-March 2017.
Ø  The share of short-term debt (with original maturity of up to one year) in total external debt increased to 19.3 per cent at end-March 2018 from 18.7 per cent at end-March 2017. The ratio of short-term debt (original maturity) to foreign exchange reserves increased to 24.1 per cent at end-March 2018 (23.8 per cent at end-March 2017).
Ø  Short-term debt on a residual maturity basis (i.e., debt obligations that include long-term debt by original maturity falling due over the next twelve months and short-term debt by original maturity) constituted 42.0 per cent of total external debt at end-March 2018 (41.6 per cent at end-March 2017) and stood at 52.3 per cent of foreign exchange reserves (53.0 per cent at end-March 2017)
Ø  US dollar denominated debt continued to be the largest component of India’s external debt with a share of 49.5 per cent at end-March 2018, followed by the Indian rupee (35.8 per cent), SDR (5.5 per cent), Japanese yen (4.8 per cent) and euro (3.4 per cent).
Ø  The borrower-wise classification shows that the outstanding debt of both government and non-government sectors increased at end-March 2018
Ø  Debt service payments declined to 7.5 per cent of current receipts at end-March 2018 as compared with 8.3 per cent at end-March 2017

Trump, Congrats Obrador

Mexican ruling party candidate Jose Antonio Meade has conceded defeat to his leftist, anti-establishment opponent, after multiple exit polls showed Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador winning by a two digit margin. Obrador, 64, would be the first leftist president in decades in Mexico and is expected to move the country in a more nationalist direction, including reducing the country’s dependence on the United States, possibly further fueling tensions with President Donald Trump. An official ‘quick count’ of results is expected at 4am GMT. Obrador part too has won in the general election with simple majority but may not be able to take up constitution amendments for which they don’t have such majority in the house.
Mexico presidential election results goes all out in favour of Andrés Manuel López Obrador with people resting their wish in him to fight menace of  drug, corruption which has made the state unpalatable for its citizen to enjoy its democracy norms.

Mexico election win on way to the leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in Mexico presidential vote former Mayor to Mexico city wants to bring change in Mexico politics to cull the rampant corruption and stop drug and don violence which has killed more than 250 politician this year.
US policies are American first and the Mexico election put  anti-Trump winner Andrés Manuel López Obrador on top slot and will he able to tread his social -political paths smoothly.
US President Donald Trump has congratulated his newly elected Mexican counterpart, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, after multiple polls and an early count showed the leftist anti-establishment candidate decisively leading the vote. “There is much to be done that will benefit both the United States and Mexico!” Trump tweeted Sunday night. Although Obrador, 64, has vowed to reduce Mexico’s dependence on the US, triggering fears of a further escalation of tension with Trump, the US leader added that he looks “very much forward to working with him.”
Media in their article pose pertinent question, Mexico’s new president Obrador : How he will pay for his ambitious slate of social programs without overspending and harming the economy? Can he make a dent in the unyielding violence of the drug war? Can he really clean up systemic corruption?

LyFLu4mT
July02, 2018 (C) Ravinder Singh progressindia2015@gmail.com
ET Story of 30% growth in Car sales was astonishing for June18 which is not a festival season when Indians make most purchases, nor was it wedding time when cars are given as dowry. Study revealed following.
While ET Chart did mention the figure of 30% for June18 is based on Sales Dip in 2017. But figures before GST and Demonetization was213,494 units for June2015 and ET reported sales of 233,359 for June18.
June Sales Growth is 9.3% in 3 Years – not even 3% Compound Growth rate.

The Hindu on April15, 2018 already reported Annual Sales growth of3.3% – 2,173,960 for FY2017-18 from 2,103,847 FY2016-17.
BS April10, 2018 Provided detailed breakup of Automotive Sales for FY2017-18.
Passenger vehicles (cars, utility vehicles and vans) closed the year with sales of 3.28 million units, growing at 7.89 per cent, against 9.23 per cent in 2016-17. Cars grew at 3.33 per cent to 2.17 million units, while utility vehicles expanded at a healthy 21 per cent to 0.92 million units.
Commercial vehicle sales made a strong comeback with 20 per cent growth in 2017-18, significantly higher than 4 per cent in 2016-17. Within the segment, sales of medium and heavy vehicles grew 12.48 per cent to 340,313 units, while those of light vehicles expanded at over 25 per cent to 516,140 units. Three-wheeler sales also hit a new record of 635,698 units, growing 24 per cent from the previous year.
Sales of two-wheelers in the world’s biggest market recorded a new high of20.19 million units last year, growing at 14.80 per cent, compared with 7 per cent in 2016-17. Motorcycle sales grew 13.69 per cent to 12.61 million units, while scooters expanded 20 per cent to 6.71 million units. Mopeds, however, declined over 3 per cent to 0.85 million units.
But further study revealed Indians continues to be affected by CBI raids on Businesses, started in 2011 in matters of Coal Blocks & Telecom Spectrum Demonetization in 2016 and GST in 2017.
Two wheeler sales in 14.8m in FY14 has expanded to 20.19m in FY18 – 36.4% growth.
Two Wheeler Sales Growth 5.4m in 4 Yrs – Car Sales 0.14m 6 Yrs

Car sales were 2,031,306 in FY2011-12 which progressed to 2,173,950 in FY2017-18.
This is only 7% Car Sales growth in 6 years.

This is indication of EARNINGS of Rich Indians had not improved in last 6 years when Indian population increased by about 13% to 14%.

Or their expenditure on Education, Healthcare, Energy, and other Household Expenditures had gone much sharply.

Redoine Faid, hollywood style escape

France police launched a massive manhunt for a notorious gangster who said his life of crime was inspired by Hollywood films like Scarface, after he pulled off a spectacular jailbreak Sunday, fleeing his prison aboard a hijacked helicopter in a commando-style operation.
Redoine Faid, 46, broke out of the prison near Paris with the help of two accomplices who used smoke bombs and angle grinders to make their way into the facility’s visiting room where Faid was talking to a brother, who was later taken into custody, according to prison unionist Martial Delabroye and a judicial source.
The men quickly made good their escape in the helicopter in an operation lasting just 10 minutes, Delabroye told AFP at the penitentiary in Reau in the French capital’s southeastern suburbs.
It is the second time Faid has pulled off a spectacular escape — in 2013, he blasted his way out of a prison in northern France using dynamite.
Some “2,900 police and gendarmes have been mobilised” for a nationwide manhunt, a police source told AFP.
The helicopter — hijacked from a terrified flight instructor — landed at around 11:15 AM (0915 GMT) in the prison yard.

The two black-clad men armed with assault rifles set off smoke bombs before breaking their way into the prison’s visitation room using the power tools.
The wardens, who were unarmed, fled to safety and raised the alarm.
The helicopter was later found in a northeastern suburb of Paris about 60 kilometres (37 miles) from the prison, one source said.
A police source said the helicopter pilot was a flight instructor waiting for a student when he was seized by Faid’s accomplices. He was forced to fly before being later freed in a state of shock.
The men apparently went on to use a car that was later found torched in a shopping mall carpark, police said.
French Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet, who arrived at the prison in Reau on Sunday evening, said the commandos most likely “used drones to survey the location… the inquiry that’s under way will tell us.”
The escape came after an appeals court in April sentenced Faid to 25 years for masterminding a botched armed robbery in 2010 in which a policewoman was killed.
Faid has been behind bars since mid-2011 for breaking the terms of his parole over past convictions for bank robberies and brazen heists of cash-in-transit vehicles.
In his 2013 jailbreak, he briefly took four guards hostage with a pistol before escaping in a waiting getaway car. All the hostages were released unharmed.
Faid was recaptured six weeks later at a hotel in an industrial area on the outskirts of Paris.
A woman working at the hotel told AFP at the time that Faid’s accomplice had paid for the room in cash and that the two men had been there for several days.
Faid had earlier been released from a 10-year stint behind bars after convincing parole officers that he regretted his criminal past and was determined to start afresh.
Police nicknamed him “The Author” for two books he co-wrote about his delinquent youth.
Faid, who has a cult following in the tough immigrant suburbs outside Paris where he grew up, has made several television appearances.

‘He’s very polite’

At a Paris film festival in April 2009, Faid approached Michael Mann, director of the 1995 gangster film Heat starring Al Pacino and Robert Niro, telling him: “You were my technical adviser.”
He wrote that he had watched the film dozens of times to perfect his bank-robbing prowess.
One of his prison supervisors said that Faid had never had any disputes with staff, “but we must always be wary”.
“In the corner of his mind, he never lost the idea of escaping. Behind all his manners — he is very polite — he always hid his game,” the supervisor said.
Delabroye, the prison union rep, said the yard where the helicopter landed is the only area not equipped with anti-aircraft netting because inmates never use it — “except to leave the prison”.
