Ujjwala Flopped Environment Impact LPG vs Electric Cooking
In acknowledging failure of the Ujjwala scheme to release LPGconnections to poor – TOI reported over 90% of poor consumers continues to use traditional fuels like Dung Cake, Wood, Farm Waste for cooking. News stories also reveal it was not free – many stories report poor households had to pay Rs.1,300 for the new connection.
But there is 50% increase in LPG use in India in 5 years. Since subsidized 14.2 kg LPG cost Rs.485 or Rs.34 per kg less half of Diesel and Petrol, points to Large Scale Diversion of LPG for Industrial Application. There is 50% increase in LPG and Petroleum Products Dealers.
ET editorial of TOI is WEIRD – Getting inspired from USA - USA has preference of ELECTRIC COOKING but the difference between US and India are –
Ø USA has 80% Food Processing – Electricity is Convenient, CLEAN & CHEAP for FOOD WARMING and MAKING Quick Snacks. Indians Cook most of the Foods at home ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION WILL BE HIGH & COST MORE.
Ø Majority of connections in India are 0.25KW and 0.5KW – Minimum Power of Hotplate Rating shall be 2000W.
1.] Coal accounts for 15% PRIMARY Energy Use in USA – India 60%.
2.] USA has huge Coal reserve, 100% Own Production – India imported 234mt FY19.
3.] Quality of Coal in India is VERY POOR – High Ash Content, High GHG Emissions,
4.] US Electricity generation is CLEAN compared to the world and India – Coal Power Generation 1314 BU out of 4282 BU, World 9723 BU coal out of 25,553 BU and India 1141 BU out of 1497 BU. [India may have overtaken USA in Coal Generation FY20]
5.] When average DOMESTIC PEAK DEMAND in India is 200 W - [50,000 MW for 250m Households] actual may be even less, Water Heating, Hot Plate Load could be 2000W+ 2000W.
6.] When power was Cheap in 1962 we had Hot Plate with 2000W rating and Emersion Rod of 1500W for water heating. Later had Geyser with 1500 W Rating and 4 Burner LPG Stove – 8000 W Heating, Switched to LPG Heating & Cooking in recent times.
7.] Worst of all Quality of Power is very poor – Even in South Delhi – 4 Hour Power cuts are Normal once or twice a month – but most of India EXPERIENCE POWER EXTRA LONG CUTS COULD Be 30 Days to Even 100 Days in case of TRANSFORMER BURN OUT.
