Earthquake 7.7 rattled the Indian Ocean
2010-06-12 23:34:29 - Nksagar -Sunday, June 13, 2010 At 01:26:50 AM at epicenter Distances: 150 km (95 miles) W of Mohean, Nicobar Islands, India an Earth Quake of magnitude 7.7 as per United States Geological Survey.

An estimated of about 9,000 people perceived strong shaking, which could result in light to moderate damage and around 37,000 people may had moderate shaking, thus could result in light damage.

With quake of such high intensity the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center immediately issued a tsunami watch for India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. Later after an hour
all watches – except for India – were canceled. “There is the possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilometers from the earthquake epicenter,” the center said.

A strong earthquake which rattled the Indian Ocean on Sunday morning, seismologists told, thus essentially prompting a tsunami watch for India.Still the magnitude of damage of property or loss of life is unknown if there is any damage as of yet. With more shocks of similar magnitude for the next 48 hours is imminent.

Earthquake of sucj potential is likely to cause huge destruction and have the potential to generate destructive Tsunami and can cause devastation along the coastal belt to an distance of thousand nautical miles from the Epicenter.
