Krishnapatnam Port Company Ltd signs a MoU with CONCOR,

New Delhi, July 5, 2011: Krishnapatnam Port Company Ltd (KPCL), India’s emerging largest gateway in the East Coast, has signed an agreement with the Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR), to provide seamless movement of container traffic from the port to the hinterland. The partnership deal is a milestone as CONCOR, the mini Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways and the largest player in the inland container rail freight segment with more than 200 high-speed container rakes, will enhance the container logistics initiative of Krishnapatnam Port.
KPCL and CONCOR will jointly develop the required rail infrastructure to cater to the growing container movement after the container terminal at KPCL goes operational in a month. The all-weather integrated container terminal with a planned annual capacity of 3 million TEU with no tidal restrictions will be the ideal hub for global trade. Two berths with a draft of 13.5 m draft, length of 650 m and a combined capacity of 1 million TEU will commence work by the end of July 2011.
Commenting on the deal, Mr. Anil Yendluri, CEO, KPCL said, “Krishnapatnam container terminal will emerge as a hub port on the east coast of India, handling mother vessels and would become gateway to India and other south asian/south east asian countries. CONCOR and KPCL would jointly strive to provide seamless, efficient supply chain solutions to the EXIM fraternity and would help in making exports from India, competetive”The companies will also develop container freight station at the port and inland container depots in the hinterland. They will also explore various business opportunities to service container and exim related trade.
Having gained enough experience in handling bulk volumes – around 16 million tonnes in 2010-11, KPCL now looks ahead to handle container cargo, which promises great business potential in the region. The port will provide adequate facilities and infrastructure for stabling/storage and operation of railway rakes/containers at its premises. CONCOR, on its part, will ensure efficient handling of containers and quick movement of container rakes to/fro the port. Thus, KPCL & CONCOR will jointly ensure efficient operations and quick turnaround of containers.
Krishnapatnam Port is evolving as the port of choice with world-class infrastructure, productivity-centered state-of-the-art facilities, hinterland connectivity and unrivalled customer service. KPCL has recently set an all-India record for discharging 95,528 tonnes of steam coal in 24 hours using the conventional unloading system of advanced mobile harbour cranes. The Port is seen as an ideal partner by CONCOR, which has already handled 2.5 million tonnes of cargo in FY’11, for the development of container traffic to and from South East Coast of India.
