Malaysian PM to meet Pope

Prime Minister Najib Razak is to fly to Rome to meet Pope Benedict XVI in personal capacity,set to meet on July 18,in 2002 former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad met Pope John Paul II for talks on Christian-Muslim relations at the Vatican.

Malaysia plan to establish diplomatic relations with the Vatican, a top official said.Malaysia is among seventeen nations that has no formal relations with the Vatican.Najib to be accompanied,delegation of senior ministers and Catholic officials led by Kuala Lumpur's Archbishop Murphy Pakiam.Najib to contemplate possible signal snap election in the next couple of months,ruling political outfit Barisan Nasional coalition,struggling to mobilise support from ethnic Chinese, Indian minorities,swung towards the opposition in 2008 general elections.

Last year there was a spate of attacks on churches after the High Court decided to lift a government ban on non-Muslims using "Allah" as a translation for "God".
