G4 cuntries to work together to bring reforms in Security Council


 Prime Minister's address to the UN General Assembly on Saturday, India and three other members of G-4 countries have pledged to work together to bring about urgent reforms in the UN Security Council. Briefing reporters after a Ministerial meeting on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York, Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai said, G-4 countries called for enlarging the Security Council in both permanent and non-permanent categories.

The other countries in the group are Brazil, Germany and Japan. Mr Mathai said, the Ministers of the grouping welcomed the decision by the General Assembly to continue the process of inter-governmental negotiations for reforms. The meeting was attended by External Affairs Minister SM Krishna and Foreign ministers of the three other countries in the grouping.

China came in support of reforms in the Security Council. Talking to our correspondent Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechie said that Beijing wants developing nations to play a bigger role in the Security Council. When asked about China’s support to India’s candidature in the Security Council, he said India is a big country and china will talk to them.
