Rajasthan Boys, Karnataka Girls win in close, exciting games

Having had a mixed tournament so far, last year’s champions Rajasthan finally got an impressive win in a close game against Madhya Pradesh on the fifth day of the Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship for Boys & Girls in Lucknow on Tuesday. In another crucial clash of the southern superpowers on the day, the Sub-Jr Nationals girls team from Karnataka outlasted Kerala in an exciting match-up.
After a strong start, Rajasthan seemed to be poised to blow the game out against Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday. Trailing by seven at halftime, MP made an important adjustment at the start of the third quarter and made it a 1 point game, 34-33, before the start of the fourth. In the high scoring final period, Rajasthan turned to their leading man Mohit (18 points) who led the way for a clear victory for his side, 55-47.
Two girls’ teams, who are close to equal in talent, came face to face when Karnataka faced Kerala. The game lived up to the billing, as Karnataka led by just one point at the end of the first quarter, but soon, they began to slowly extend their lead. Lopamudra, who has been one of the most consistent scorers in the girls’ division at the championship, led with 19 points, as Kerala failed to close the gap and lost the game, 46-35.
Kerala boys had a better outing, as they faced the team from Delhi. It was another unpredictable face-off, as Kerala led by eight in the first quarter, but Delhi made a comeback, and by the end of the 3rd quarter, were just one point behind. But Kerala stepped up on the gear in the fourth quarter behind Sudarsan (16 points) and sped away to a 56-43 win.
