“one woman” ballet
with Uma Sahrma as “STREE on 29th
February, 2012
Uma
Sharma’s “STREE” is Every-woman. The form is dance. Classical Kathak with new
format. A solo ballet. The woman is supreme. Man is only a symbol. The music
accentuates, the narration helps clarify history.
But the
presentation by Uma Sharma is in a manner in which content does not become
argument. It remains pure dance. Aesthetically and visually, it is an art
experience. It is the theme which is the argument. Any theme is, even if you
depict nature. The way you depict it tells you whether it is beautiful or ugly.
The comment is always implicit. If Uma Sharma succeeds in communication through
her art what it is to be a woman there is no argument there. It is a statement.
A kind of statement that can come only from an inner fire because she too is a
woman and through her art because she is a dancer.
Dance choreography by Uma Sharma and Music by Pt.
Jawala Prasad.
Script: Aruna Vasudev
Lyrics: Rifat Sarosh
Lighting: Nitin Jain
Uma Sharma as “Stree”
Narrators: S.M. Zaheer (Urdu), Abhinav Chaturvedi
(Hindi & Sanskrit)
Pt. Jawala
Prasad has composed the haunting music. Rifat Sarosh has written the evocative
lyrics, which suggest, describe and evoke the moods of the “woman” as she goes
from the joy and the pride, through humiliation and subjugation to her final
manifestation as today’s “Durga” – independent and strong.
The performance will be at Kamani Auditorium on 29th
February, 2012. I will be inviting leading lady personalities from different
fields, viz. Dancers, actors, lawyers, politicians, social workers,
bureaucrats, painters, and parliamentarians etc. who will be honored.
