Delhi Civic polls over 55 percent

The official media has estimated 55-58 per cent of the 1.15 crore electorate have exercised its franchise, in the Delhi municipal elections, the first for the trifurcated civic body held on Sunday.Forty-four per cent of over 1.15 crore eligible voters in the polls to three municipal bodies in Delhi are women, with north Delhi accounting for the highest number at 19.17 lakh women voters.Sunday's election will witness a straight competition between the Congress and the BJP, parties such as the BSP,Samajwadi Party too fielded applicants. Delhi this time has, 50% seats (136) set aside for female applicants.Municipal elections is for the trifurcated Municipal Corporation of Delhi.North Delhi Corporation,East Delhi Corporation,
South Delhi Corporation.
 

Of the total 1,15,20,508 voters, 35 are transgenders 17 in East Delhi Corporation, 16 in North and two in South."The total number of men voters in three corporations are 64,2168 while the same for women are 50,73,001," a State Election Commission (SEC) official said.
According to SEC, the North Delhi Corporation has the highest number of voters at 44,58,158, including 24.86 lakh men and 19.70 lakh women.
South Delhi Corporation has a total of 43,18,788 voters - 24.37 lakh men and 18.79 lakh women while East Delhi has 27,43,562 voters - 15.18 lakh men and 12.24 lakh women.
South and North Corporations have 104 each wards while East has 64 wards.
The electoral fate of 2,423 candidates would be sealed during the polling held in 272 wards of the three civic bodies  East, South and North carved out of the existing Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Nearly 30,000 armed police workers have been deployed at the voting booths to guarantee free and fair elections.Electronic voting machines malfunctioned in Sarita Vihar, Narela, Mandwali, Majnu ka Tila, Sadar Bazar and Gokulpuri among other places.reports NDTV

Voting patterns suggest for metros that people do not come for voting in large numbers.This time too the voting in Delhi will be around fifty percent.The polling began at 8 AM and would end at 5:30 PM. The counting of votes would be done on Tuesday.
A State Election Commission official said 18 to 20 per cent voters cast their ballot till 12 noon. "Lot of enthusiasm is being seen among people. Places like Malaviya Nagar and Vasant Vihar have so far registered a low turnout but I expect polling to pick up given the good weather," State Election Commissioner Rakesh Mehta told PTI.
