Greek voters verdict for new coalition

Greece's ruling coalition parties heading toward losing a majority in Sunday's general elections, in which the government's austerity measures were the largest issue. With majority of votes counted, the socialist PASOK party and its coalition partner New Democracy lost a significant number of seats. In the 300-seat parliament.
the ministry says opposition minority parties, which oppose the austerity measures, gained more seats than they had before the election. The ruling coalition has been pushing for the austerity measures as conditions for receiving help from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

New Democracy ruling parties manage to form a coalition with another partner, they may be pressed to revise the austerity measures. On negotiations for a new coalition become bogged down, then a new election could be held. Whence in delay in forming a new coalition government, it could stir up political turmoil and reignite European credit concerns.  With 55-percent of the vote counted, the ministry announced its seat projection for each party.

The ministry predicts that the 2 ruling parties  which have been promoting the austerity measures  will lose many seats. But the governing coalition is likely to garner 153 seats to secure a parliamentary majority.

There is  possibility that the coalition may fail to win a majority as the ministry expects minority parties that oppose the austerity policies will increase their number of parliamentary seats.
