Meghalaya CM, Dr Mukul Sangma Monday briefed the Press at the Press Club of India, New
Delhi expressing his shocking concern about the growing marginalization of people
from the North East in different walks of life in the metro cities. Latest trend and situation needs attention and careful consideration by all concerned authorities.Briefing in his explanation to concerned authorities of educational institutes they should become sensitive to
the diversity of the great country and understand its cultural and
normative differences especially more in the wake of the recent instances of suicide of a
young girl in Gurgaon and death of a Manipuri youth in Bangalore.First year MBA student at Amity University allegedly committed
suicide after she was reportedly caught while cheating during the
examination. “Proper investigation will reveal the truth,” said Sangma.Meghalaya CM Sangma added, he has already written an official communiqué
to the Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal requesting him to investigate into
the series of attacks, both verbal and physical besides discrimination,
targeting of the students of the Northeast region in different
educational institutions across the country and to enact a stringent law
to deal with the situation.
Meghalaya CM also added that he would soon talk to all chief ministers of the Northeast to mount joint pressure on the Centre for speedy and effective action in this regard.
On circumstances led to the death of his niece Dana, Sangma pointed out that the invigilator who claimed to have caught Dana copying “wrote some adverse remarks on Dana’s answersheet”. “The mobile was in Dana’s pocket and she was sitting in the front row of the examination hall. There were hardly 20-odd students and two invigilators were on guard.” “I sent responsible officials from the Meghalaya House to investigate and they confirmed that they suspected some foul play. I got in touch with the authorities and demanded stringent action,” he stated.
Delhi has two molestation cases against northeast women reported from different places of Delhi.
First case is of Manipuri woman who was allegedly molested by unidentified person at Gurgaon on Friday night and second is a Naga girl molested at Chawri Bazar on Sunday night.
