Protests across Greece over austerities

On May day meant for labor day has thousands of Greek workers have staged protests across the country against the government's austerity policy ahead of Sunday's parliamentary election.Major labor unions in Greece organized demonstrations on May Day Tuesday.

  Athens, crowds of people held a rally, hoisting banners and placards. They criticized sharp cuts in the number of public servants and other belt-tightening measures by the governing coalition. They insisted that the measures have deprived workers of their rights.Protesters also criticized the European Union for pressuring Greece to implement austerity policies in exchange for a bailout from its credit crisis.

The austerity cuts have been one of the major points at issue in the election.The latest public polls show surging support for anti-bailout parties. The governing coalition is expected to lose a large number of seats.Media agencies
