Taiwanese Legislators visit Spratly Islands

On Spratly Islands in the South China Sea three legislators from Taiwan’s ruling Nationalist Party traveled on military plane to Taiping Island Monday and the largest island is under Taiwanese rule. The disputed  Spratly Islands are claimed by Taiwan, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei and Malaysia.Lawmakers stayed on the island for two and a half hours  offered encouragement to coast guard officials stationed there. After returning to Taipei, the legislators told reporters they will call on Taiwan’s leaders to take aggressive action to protect Taiwan’s territory and sovereignty in the South China Sea.
Chinese and Philippine ships were in a standoff earlier this month over rights to another island in the area.Tensions culminated when the Philippines and Vietnam last month conducted joint military drills there with the United States.
