The
flood condition in Dhemaji district continues to be grim as surging
water has flooded 330 villages. Official sources said that 124 people
have died in flood and landslides so far. Flood water also damaged 2
lakh 55 thousand hectare of crop lands.
AIR correspondent reports that the recent flood which is considered worst -ever since 2004, affected standing crops and livestock. Barpeta district has the maximum cropland area affected by the floods at 32 thousand hectares. Assam government decided to distribute paddy seedlings to the farmers free of cost. For that, seedlings are being raised in community nurseries and Krishi Vigan Kendras .On the other hand, fund has been released to district veterinary departments for vaccination and to purchase other medicines. Official sources said that around 20 lakh domestic animals affected in the floods. Vaccination drive has already started in a few districts and will continue till August this year.
A central team is to visit Assam on Tuesday to assess the damage caused by the flood. Principal Secretary of state Revenue and Disaster Management said that on the basis of its reports, the Centre is likely to grant funds to the flood affected state. Assam Chief Minister has urged the Prime Minister to release over 11 thousand crore rupees as immediate and medium term assistance to the flood hit state. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who made an aerial survey of the flood hit areas on already announced an ad-hoc package of 500 crore rupees.
