Palestine approves Arafat autopsy

A close aide to Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas says the president has ordered the body of late President Yasser Arafat be exhumed for autopsy.
Saeb Erekat announced the decision on Monday following suggestions last week that Arafat may have been assassinated by radiation poisoning.

Qatar-based satellite TV channel Al Jazeera reported that researchers at a Swiss institute found traces of highly radioactive polonium on the clothing and other items the late president was wearing at the time of his death in 2004.Arafat's body will be exhumed from a mausoleum in Ramallah, the West Bank, to be examined there by the institute's experts.

The Swiss researchers could not conclusively determine the cause of Arafat's death in their preliminary investigation as the polonium had decayed.

A separate investigation by the Palestinian Authority was unable to identify the cause of the death.
