Hamid Ansari was
sworn-in as the Vice President of the country for the second consecutive
term by President Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi on Saturday.Ansari, 75, was administered the oath by the President at a grand ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan which
was attended by Prime Minister Mamohan Singh and ruling Congress party
chief Sonia Gandhi.
Hamid Ansari is India's 14th Vice
President for a second five-year term on Saturday, after four days after he
won the vice presidential polls defeating his main challenger and former
Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh by a huge margin.Ansari became the country's second Vice President to win a second consecutive term.
Ansari had polled 490 first preference votes out of 728 valid votes cast in the election held on 7th August. Jaswant Singh polled 238 votes.Ansari got more votes than he had secured in the 2007 election.He
had the backing of the Congress and its allies in the UPA, including
the Nationalist Congress Party, DMK and the National Conference.
After Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Ansari is the only person to have been re-elected to the office. His main rival Jaswant Singh was the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party- led National Democratic Alliance's candidate.
