New Delhi, August 22, 2012: Participants of the first batch of India-Women in Leadership (i-WIL), a certificate course in political leadership for women at IIM Bangalore, visiting Delhi for field exposure, made an appeal to the Indian Prime Minister to ensure expeditious passing of the WomenⳠReservation Bill.
We are certain we are the cusp of history with the imminent passing of the historic WomenⳠReservation Bill that has seen the onslaught of Indian patriarchs. We take this opportunity to make a fervent plea to you to ensure this celebration of a historic reform happens soon,䠴he women said in a letter to Dr Manmohan Singh, which was unveiled at a press meet here.
We strongly believe that gender equality in governance is a crucial step in achieving the vision of an equal and empowered society,䊩t further said.
Pushpavalli R, former dy Mayor of Mysore and organizing secretary of Mahila Congress in Mysore, who is a student in this programme said, 㔩me has come for women to play a more proactive role in Indian politics. The Reservation Bill is one certain tool to ensure this.䠓halini Tomar, a PhD in Psychology and a candidate of Rashtriya Lok Manch at the recently concluded UP Assembly elections said, 㗯men have sharper focus on development and are bound to make great leaders. We must be given fair chance, and the course helps us sharpen our skills better.伯span>

Speaking at the press meet Prof Anand Kumar of Jawharlal Nehru University and Prof Rajeev Gowda of IIM-Bangalore wished students a bright future. ㅮhanced participation of women in Indian Parliament and Assemblies a crying need of the hour will mean true democratization of Indian politics. The first batch is carrying that beacon of this change,䠐rof Kumar said. Prof Gowda added, 㗥 are happy to see the enthusiastic response to this innovative programme.ࠗe have worked hard to ensure that participants have optimum opportunity for learning and exposure,䠐rof Gowda, who is the Director of Centre for Public Policy (CPP) at IIMB said.ࠠ

The students arrived in Delhi on August 7, 2012 for field exposure visits. They will spend the week studying at Jawaharlal Nehru University, while also visiting the Indian Parliament, meeting influential leaders, and going to a number of international embassies.

The i-WIL Programme is a joint collaboration between CPP-IIMB, and New Delhi based womenⳊempowerment NGO, Centre for Social Research (CSR). The programme aims to strengthen women leadership in India by providing women with a demonstrated interest in governance, the political skills, knowledge, and tools necessary to pursue a career in politics. In Delhi, the students will meet Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Rajya Sabha MP Ram Vilas Paswan, and Minister of State for Defense Pallam Raju besides witnessing a Parliamentary session.

Candidates will also have the opportunity to learn from renowned academicians in JNU as well as visit the German and American Embassies, and Doordarshan Director General Tripurari Sharan. The students will also be attending the August 15th Independence Day celebration at Red Fort.
