Obama on Friday phoned Netanyahu, who was in New York for the UN General Assembly. The White House said in a statement that Obama reaffirmed his unshakeable commitment to Israel's security. Statement said the two leaders noted their close cooperation and coordination on what it called "the threat posed by Iran." It also said they are in full agreement on the shared goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Obama has come under pressure from Netanyahu to be more specific in public in preventing Iran from getting nuclear weaponry. In a speech before the UN General Assembly on Thursday, Netanyahu warned that the world has until next summer to stop Iran from building one and he called for placing a red line on Iran's nuclear weapons program. Further said Iran must be stopped before it completes the second stage of nuclear enrichment needed to make a weapon.Jewish Americans are said to be unhappy that no schedule has been set for Obama and Netanyahu to hold a meeting during the Israeli leader's visit to address the UN.
Obama apparently sought to demonstrate improvement in his ties with Netanyahu through the phone conversation. Slightly more than one month remains before the US presidential election..
