Aung San Suu Kyi seeks US investment
Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has asked the United States to help rebuild her country by boosting investment and further easing economic sanctions.
Aung San Suu Kyi is visiting the US for the first time since she was released from house arrest in November 2010.
On Tuesday, she gave a lecture in Washington with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Aung San Suu Kyi expressed gratitude for US help in her country’s movement to democracy. She said the rebuilding of her nation has only just begun and urged US businesses to invest in Myanmar in fields such as education and medicine.
Clinton said she welcomes Myanmar’s democratic reforms, but noted the country is still detaining political prisoners and has military ties with North Korea.
The US Secretary of State said Myanmar still has a lot of work to do including strengthening the rule of law and increasing transparency.
During her 2 weeks in the US, Aung San Suu Kyi plans to visit 7 cities and reach out to exiled Myanmarese.
