Mr. Feilim McLaughlin 16th Nov 2012 Ambassador of Ireland 230, Jor Bagh, New Delhi-110003 Dear Mr. Feilim Mclaughlin, On behalf of BJP Mahila Morcha & BJP Overseas Affairs, we would like to lodge our strong protest against the refusal to provide medical relief to an Indian national Mrs. Savita Halappanavar, aged 31 years at University Hospital Galway, Ireland. Mrs. Halappanavar suffered a miscarriage and eventually died on 28th Oct 2012. Many news agencies have reported that Mrs. Savita Halappanavar repeatedly pleaded with the hospital staff to help terminate her pregnancy since she was suffering from miscarriage. However, she was refused medical intervention as the hospital cited their religious belief and said “Termination was not possible since Ireland is a Catholic Country”. Though Savita highlighted the fact that she was neither Catholic nor Irish, medical help was not extended to her. This is violation of human right of an Indian citizen living in Ireland. Sir, we firmly believe no religion permits the murder of an innocent woman. We strongly believe that Mrs. Savita Halappanavar would have survived if her pregnancy was medically terminated well in time. There was a real, clear and substantial risk to the life of the mother which was a reality, the hospital and its staff deliberately overlooked. We the members of BJP, the Principal Opposition party in India are pained and anguished that an Indian mother has died and her family is bereaved. We demand a probe against the concerned hospital, doctors and staff whose deliberate refusal to medically intervene caused Savita’s death. We demand speedy justice for the family of Savita Halappanavar and hope such tragic incidents do not reoccur. Smriti Z.
