Earthquake in Iran & Tornado in Auckland
Iran earthquake
Iran, at least eight people were killed and 12 others injured when an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit eastern parts of the country. Iran's news agency said people ran out of their homes after the tremor struck the Zahan district in South Khorasan province yesterday. Walls and buildings collapsed, and several people were left trapped under the rubble. Officials said the death toll could rise as rescuers reached the affected areas. The Iranian Seismological Centre said at least 12 aftershocks have been registered since the quake struck at 20:38 local time.
Tornado rips city of Auckland
Three people have been killed as a rare tornado ripped through western suburbs of the New Zealand city of Auckland. The tornado struck Hobsonville and Whenuapai today afternoon, uprooting trees and taking roofs off houses. Two of those who died were believed to be working on the construction of a school and another was hit by a tree, the Civil Defence office said.
Another seven people were taken to hospital, said the office in a statement, adding that 150 homes had been badly damaged. Some 250 residents were being taken care of at an air force base, it said.
A number of planned flights were delayed by the storm, which also caused power outages in several suburbs. Fallen trees and debris blocked some roads.
