Australia to hold elections Sept. 14

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard declare a national election for September 14th, a surprise move for voters. Gillard announced the election date for both chambers of parliament at a news conference in Canberra on Wednesday.

Governments in Australia traditionally give little more than a month's notice of a national election. A rare for a prime minister to announce the date eight  months in advance.

Gillard said she wanted to set the date to avoid a guessing game, and end political uncertainty.Media agencies
