3 04 2013 World Bank chief Jim Yong Kim has outlined a new agenda for the global community to end extreme poverty by 2030.He announced the plan in a speech in Washington on Tuesday.
Kim said the global economy still faces risks, including the financial crisis in Cyprus and the European credit uncertainties. But he said developing nations are expected to see 5.5-percent growth this year and the world is on the right track for recovery.
Kim said the World Bank aims to reduce the number of people living below the poverty line of 1.25 dollars per day to less than 3 percent of the global population by 2030. The current ratio is about 20 percent. He said the World Bank will preferentially allocate loans to development projects that would create jobs and help reduce poverty in developing countries.
Kim further added ending poverty and boosting shared prosperity are not goals for the World Bank alone to achieve, but for its member countries as well.
Kim to appeal for the cooperation of the global community at the annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund scheduled for mid-April.
