India's participation in Iranian port of Chahbar figures in External Affairs Minister's talks in Tehran
India’s participation in Chahbahar Port project in Iran figured prominently in External Affairs Minister Salaman Khurshid's talks in Tehran today. The Chahbahar port will provide access for Indian goods to Afghanistan bypassing Pakistan which doesn’t allow transit facilities for Indian goods.
Khurshid co-chaired the 17th session of India- Iran Joint Commission with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi. Three agreements on collaboration in management of water resources, Quality Standards and Foreign Services Instiutes were signed between the two sides.
Later, Khurshid called on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and also met the Speaker of the Iranian Majlis Ali Larijani and the Advisor to the Supreme Leader, Ali Akbar Velayati. The two sides reaffirmed their support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan and called for a peaceful solution to the end violence in Syri .
At the meetings, India and Iran reiterated the importance of greater connectivity between Russia, Central and South Asia through the International North South Transport Corridor and the need to expand trade and banking relations. Both agreed to study the prospects of joint investment in both countries.
The External Affairs Minister inaugurated the Indian Cultural Center at the Indian Embassy premises in Teheran and interacted with the members of Indian community.
The External Affairs Minister also raised with Iran problems faced by Sikh community in that country, particularly regarding registration of marriages.
Sikhs in Iran face problems with regard to registration of marriages under Iranian laws.
There are about 3,000 persons of Indian origin in Iran and one third of them belong to the Sikh community.
