Philippines' General and local elections on Monday,despite scattered killings and fears of fraud, the polls to be peaceful after authorities took steps to prevent clashes facing raucous democracies. Balloting begins at 7am and ends at 7pm with first results expected with two days.
Nearly fifty two million Filipinos have registered to elect 18,000 candidates, including half of the 24-member Senate, approximately three hundred members of the House of Representatives and leaders of a Muslim autonomous region in the south, where Islamic insurgents, Al-Qaeda-linked gunmen and private armies have long been a concern.
