Myanmar's 25th anniversary of civil uprising
People in Myanmar are celebrating the 25th anniversary of a nationwide pro-democracy uprising, August 1988, the Myanmar government used force against 200,000 protestors led by students, and killed or injured more than 1,000.
On Tuesday, about 3,000 people attended the anniversary event in the country's largest city, Yangon.
Participants included those who joined the uprising and now live overseas as political refugees, as well as former political prisoners.
The activists who took part in the uprising are referred to as the "88 Generation". The group's leader said in a speech that they hope to work with the government to realize democracy, government issued temporary visas for the political refugees. It also sent officials to help the organizers in an apparent attempt to show the progress of Myanmar's democratization.
