elsewhere.
In the talk at the Jamia Millia Islamia
University on the subject of his latest book,
Phenomenology of the Cinepanettone
Prof. O’Leary will discuss this cinematic
phenomenon of Cinepanettone that has

ITALIAN
LITERATURE IN
CINEMA
􀀁􀀁 􀀁
In a 14th-century Benedictine monastery,
populated by a parade of grotesque
characters, all of whom spend their
time lurking in dark places or scuttling,
half-unseen, in the omnipresent gloom,
something strange happens. A series
of mysterious and gruesome deaths are
somehow tied up with the unwelcome
attention of the Inquisition, sent to root out
suspected heretical behavior among the
monastic scribes whose lives are dedicated
to transcribing ancient manuscripts for their
famous library, the secrets of which are being
protected at a terrible cost.
Umberto Eco (5th January 1932) is an
Italian semiotician, essayist, philosopher,
literary critic, and novelist. Out of his
numerous published works, he is best known
for his path-breaking 1980 novel Il nome
della Rosa (The Name of the Rose). Some of
his other famous works include Il pendolo
di Foucault (Foucault’s Pendulum) 1988 and
L’isola del giorno prima (The Island of the
Day Before) 1994. His most recent novel Il
cimitero di Praga (The Prague Cemetery),
released in October 2010, was a best-seller.

After a car accident Leo is hospitalized
and at the clinic he tells his doctor,
professor Bennet, the history and exploits
of the Tibetan poet-sage Milarepa. The
legend is told in three distinct chapters:
black magic or practices of witches, white
magic or the attainment of perfection
and wisdom and the transfiguration or
detachment from material reality through
the resurrection. The film, set in Tibet,
was shot in Abruzzo a region in Central
Italy, on the suggestion of Fosco Maraini,
Italian photographer, writer, mountaineer
and academic best known for his work in
Tibet and Japan. The film also received a
raving review from none other than Pier
Paolo Pasolini.
Liliana Cavani, (born in 1933) Italian
film director and screenwriter, began
her career as a documentary filmmaker
with the Italian network RAI in the
early 1960s. She became internationally
known with her film The Night Porter in
1974. Her films have intellectual
ambitions and historical concerns and
both her documentary and feature films
have won many awards. She has also
been an opera director.

She is sad not only to leave her home,
but also Francesco with whom she is in
a serious relationship. She leaves, heavyhearted
hoping to return in June. What
she finds however is completely different
