Maharaja Ranjit Singh Polo Premier Challenge” brought back the game to Punjab after 75 years
· Punjab Saddlers bagged the coveted trophy by winning over Royal rangers by 6/4.5
· The event was organized in the region with an objective to revive the game of Royal and Elite
12th March 2014: Associated with the purple of aristocracy and the royalty the world over, polo is not only a demonstration of strength but a remarkable expression of harmonizing ingenuity of the rider with the innate response of the trained horse.
The royal sport was brought back by Royal Punjab Polo with region’s first ever Polo championship“Maharaja Ranjit Singh Polo Premier Challenge” in Ludhiana. Three teams English Stallion, Punjab Saddlers and Royal Rangers, led by seasoned polo players Sameer Suhag, Dhruvpal Godara and Rajkumar Karan Vijay Singh battled for the title over the three days from 7th-9th march at the exquisite location of Ireo Waterfront. The other eminent players included Manupal Godara, Ashwini sharma, Vishal Singh, Anmol Ratan Singh, Sachin Sarbalia and Baljinder Dhillon. Punjab Saddlers won the coveted trophy by defeating Royal Rangers at 6/4.5.
The prestigious event, the brain child of Mr. Maninder Singh Sethi, President Maharaja Ranjit Singh Polo Federation, was dedicated to the revival of this Royal equestrian sport in the state. MRSPPC brought back the royal legacy, unmatched power, class and tradition and over the bar aggression to the land of kings. The first ever Polo championship of the state satiated the hunger for thrills and gush and the thirst for luxury and indulgence of the elite audience of the land.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Maninder Sethi, said, “We are making an attempt to make our sophisticated audience, imbibe the élan and ethos of polo. Punjabis are known for their valour and grandeur and Polo matches the verve and enthusiasm of Punjabis perfectly. The event is a historic moment as it is being organized for the first time post-independence .The heart of the event is the legacy of sport which is all about grandeur, gallantry and glamour.”
He further added, “The equestrian sport has a glorious history in Punjab too. Polo finds its heart in Punjab during the 19th century and spanned over generations in the royal circuit. The Patiala Tigers team of the Patiala Army won the coveted Viceroy’s Cup and Beresford Cup. Punjab also produced the only ten handicappers India has ever produced apart from shaping some of the finest players in Polo like General Joginder Singh and General Jaswant Singh. How could we not put in efforts to bring back the heritage.”
On the day one, English Stallion lost to Punjab Saddlers by .5 score at 7/6.5. The inaugural day also saw a rally of exotic vintage cars. It was such a delight to the eyes of the audience.
The second day of the “Maharaja Ranjit Singh Polo Premier Challenge” was action packed, with the Royal Rangers and English Stallion putting up a great show for the onlookers. The fervour of the players was on an all-time high. Raj Kumar Karan Vijay Singh from the royal family of Jodhpur steered the Royal Rangers while the Arjuna award winner Sameer Suhaag lead the English Stallion.
The Royal Rangers lead at 3.5 / 0(English stallion) in the first Chukker and won the game at 6/5.5 over English Stallion.
The Grand Finale enthralled the audience with the extravagant sports car rally, exciting show by a pack of Harley Davidson riders and polo stunt performances.
The Grand Finale kicked off with showcase of Ludhiana’s finest Jaguars, Rolls Royces' and Audi's rallying and grabbing the limelight. The final match was played by the Royal Rangers and Punjab Saddlers which included some of the most competent Polo players in the world. Every second of the hour long game was thrilling. Chukker one saw the Punjab Saddlers take the lead with 2/0. Royal Rangers put up a tough fight and scored 2.5 in the second chukker. Punjab saddlers remained at 3 in the second chukker. Royal rangers took left the Punjab saddlers behind with 4.5/3 in the third chukker. But Punjab Saddlers put up a fierce battle in the final chukker and won the match by 6/4.5.
Apart from the polo players of international repute, the show witnessed the presence of eminent personalities of Punjab like Neeraj Saluja of SEL group , Daman Oswal, ADGP S.K. Sharma (ips), Rajat aggarwal, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana;Rahul Sidhu, Sushil verma, Ashish Chowdhary, Dr. Vivek saggar, and Ajay nayyar amongst others. The lifestyle sporting event hosted by Excelsior ended with high spirits, credit to the players, action-packed match and manoeuvring feats demonstrated by the talented horses.
