Myanmar president calls for cooperation for peace

Myanmar President U Thein Sein on Sunday called on all parties to make greater-than-ever cooperation for peace, saying people in areas where armed conflicts have receded are starting to enjoy the fruits of peace.

U Thein Sein made the remarks on the occasion of the 32nd International Day of Peace.

He said peace-making work is crucial for every citizen and the conflicts in the country are not only affecting those living in the conflict-torn areas, but also individuals across the country.

Highlighting the efforts his government has made since taking office, the president called on the parliament, political parties, army, ethnic groups and civil society to work together to seek peace.

U Thein Sein also expressed the belief that a framework for political discussions and dialogue could be drawn soon and a nationwide ceasefire agreement could be signed.

He cited former United Nations Secretary-General U Thant as saying “Wars begin in the minds of men, and in those minds, love and compassion would have built the defense of peace.”

He urged all citizens in the country to sustain the momentum for peace, which he said is a product of the country’s concerted and continuous efforts. Media agencies
