ISIS demands $200 mn ransom

Jan 20,  5:39 PM

The Islamic State militant group has released a video threatening to kill two Japanese hostages unless it receives a USD 200 million ransom within 72 hours, but Tokyo has vowed not to give in to terrorism. The video shows two men believed to be Haruna Yukawa, who was captured last year, and freelance journalist Kenji Goto, both wearing orange clothing.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe demanded IS immediately free the two hostages unharmed. Mr Abe was to make the short drive from Jerusalem to visit Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah before cutting short his tour to fly home to Japan. On Saturday, while in Cairo, Mr Abe promised USD 200 million in non-military aid for countries fighting Islamic State. The Islamic State allegedly targeted Japanese nationals for Japan's involvement in the international campaign aimed at destroying the militant group.
