Modi govt stands exposed on 1984 anti-Sikh riots probe

Sunday, 01 February 2015
In case the leaked news reports about a pane headed by a former Supreme Court judge having recommended setting up of a Special Investigation Team to probe the 1984 anti-Sikh riots are correct, then it is a severe indictment of the Narendra Modi led NDA government.

The Modi government owes an explanation to the country and the families of the riots victims in particular as to why it played politics on the issue and has so far delayed setting-up of the SIT since it came to power eight months back.

All that was required by the Modi government was to accept the recommendation made by the Arvind Kejriwal government of Delhi, which in its cabinet meeting on January 30, had strongly recommended setting-up of a SIT to probe the cases wrongly closed by the Delhi Police.
The Prime Minister himself and home minister Mr Rajnath Singh maintained a mysterious silence on numerous reminders sent by Arvind Kejriwal and Mr HS Phoolka during last eight months, requesting implementation of the decision to set-up the SIT.

It has been three decades since the worst riots in the history of national capital took place and since then many complainants and witnesses have already died. In case, the Modi government was at all serious, it should not have wasted another year for mere petty politics.

This is not for the first time that the Modi government has played with the emotions of the anti-Sikh riots victims.  In November last, when there was a possibility of by-elections taking place to three assembly seats of Delhi, the home ministry leaked the information about enhanced compensation for the victims families.

However, on being questioned by the Election Commission, the Modi government used the convenient excuse that no such decision was taken.
The Aam Aadmi Party strongly condemns the attitude of the Modi government on the probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and promises the families of the victims that it will renew its decision after being voted to form the government in Delhi on February 7. (ENDS)
