Supreme Court committee headed by ex-CJI RM Lodha has prescribed punishments for Chennai Super Kings official Gurunath Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra for being involved in betting in IPL 2013.Suspension of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals comes with immediate effect.
“Rajasthan Royals have damaged the faith of BCCI and the sport and Raj Kundra has been found guilty of misconduct. R Kundra was placing bets through a known punter and was constantly in touch with bookies. Therefore Kundra iis now ineligible from taking part in cricket for five years and suspended for life from being involved with BCCI,” said Justice Lodha.
Misconduct of Gurunath Meiyappan, the son-in-law of ex-BCCI chief and CSK owner N. Srinivasan, too, has been proven. “He was part of CSK and by betting he violated anti-corruption code. It is difficult to accept Guru has passion for the game. He also suffered loss of 60 lakh in bets. If Meiyappan's reputation is tarnished, it is small compared to the damage done to the sport. He has been suspended for life from cricket activities,” added Justice Lodha.
Lodha committee was appointed by a Supreme Court Bench on January 22. Its verdict is final and binding on the BCCI, the promoters and owners of the cash-rich and popular IPL. The final call to implement the decisions of the Lodha panel will rest on the IPL Governing Council.
