SAPPORO, 2 OCTOBER 2015 – AirAsia X celebrated its inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur – Sapporo which landed on time this morning at 0810hrs at the New Chitose International Airport with an encouraging 90% flight load, marking the long-haul low-cost airline’s 3rd destination into Japan, after Tokyo-Haneda and Osaka-Kansai from Kuala Lumpur.

#3: Home teams Punjab boys and girls win opening games
Ludhiana, Punjab, 3rd October 2015: After the inauguration ceremony on the opening day of the 66th Junior National Basketball Championship taking place in Ludhiana, Punjab, the home teams entered the indoor court at Guru Nanak Stadium for their first games of the tournament. The defending champions Punjab boys faced Rajasthan in their level 1 game in front of their home crowd. Many of the boys from the Punjab team have been trained at the same court here in Ludhiana.
Punjab came out strong in the first quarter, taking an early lead in the game. Their India camper Rahul Mehla led the way on the offensive end for the Punjab team. However, Rajasthan fought back in the middle periods relying on the scoring of former India player Mahipal Singh, who ended the game with 31 points. Towards the end though, Punjab took over the game with contributions from Ajit Poonia who scored 22 points in the game. In the end, the Punjab boys pulled off a 85-68 victory.
The Punjab girls team faced Delhi in their level 1 encounter yesterday evening. The match was a one-sided encounter with Punjab’s experienced campers Somi Kumari and Gagandeep Kaur scoring with ease. Delhi was blown out 56-24 by the Punjab team, who outscored Delhi in all four periods. Defending champions Chhattisgarh girls also began their campaign with a 81-45 victory against Madhya Pradesh, led by Vandana’s 26 points and Riya’s 25 points. The boys’ contingent of Chhattisgarh also started the tournament well with a comfortable 56-39 victory against Jammu and Kashmir.
On the morning of Day 2, the Uttar Pradesh girls continued their good form with their second victory of the tournament against Maharashtra. Vaishnavi top scored for the UP team with 22 points. The Haryana girls bounced back from their Day 1 loss with a victory against West Bengal in a high-scoring contest that ended 91-76. Bharti put up 33 points for Haryana, while Paulami put up 38 points for West Bengal in a losing effort.
The Tamil Nadu girls had their first game of the tournament today morning against Himachal Pradesh. Tamil Nadu made easy work of their opponent and registered a 63-29 victory on the basis of a balanced team scoring effort.

About the 66th Junior National Basketball Championship

The 66th Junior National Basketball Championship is being organised in Ludhiana, Punjab. The tournament for the ‘18 and under’ category is scheduled from October 2 to October 9 2015 in the basketball hotbed of Punjab, which has produced numerous star international players. The Punjab Basketball Association is the organising body for the tournament under the aegis of the Basketball Federation of India. The venue for the championship is the courts at the Guru Nanak Stadium. There is one indoor court and two outdoor courts at the venue.
Last year’s Junior National Championship was held in Kochi, Kerala. Home team Punjab boys were the winners of the 65th version of the tournament; while Delhi came runners up and Tamil Nadu were the third placed team in the boys’ category. For the girls, Chhattisgarh are the defending champions, who defeated the Kerala girls in the final last year. Uttar Pradesh girls achieved third place.
This year’s tournament will witness the participation of 24 states, each with a boys’ and girls’ team. The last time a national level basketball championship was held in Ludhiana was the Senior National Basketball Championship in 2012-13.

The Basketball Federation of India or BFI is the governing and controlling body of basketball in India, and is responsible for the development and promotion of the sport at all levels. BFI has been involved in conducting camps, clinics, events, and training sessions at its academies for the development of basketball. BFI came into being in 1935 and took complete control over Indian basketball in 1950. Prior to that time, the Indian Olympic Association handled the conduct of Indian basketball championships. Since 1950, the BFI has been conducting various such championships, from the grassroots to senior team participation in international tournaments. In addition, the BFI has been responsible for the establishment of strong sub-junior and junior level programs. The BFI has to its credit produced several international players of repute, among them 17 have been bestowed with the honour of Arjuna Awards. Earlier in June 2015, 19-year-old Satnam Singh Bhamara made history by becoming the first Indian national to be drafted by an NBA team, when he was selected by the Dallas Mavericks. Recognizing the importance of planned urbanisation in India, and considering the significant success achieved by Sweden in this domain, the Ananta Centre and the Embassy of Sweden are convening a public program on “Rethinking Urbanisation for a Good Life”.
The discussion will revolve around the importance of planned urbanization in India; the challenges and opportunities in the Indian context and the key learning for India from Sweden’s success story in this domain.

H.E. Mr. Mehmet Kaplan is the Minister of Housing, Urban Development and Information Technology, Government of Sweden. He is aligned with the Swedish Green Party (Miljöpartiet de Gröna). He was previously a member of the Riksdag (2006-2014), spokesperson for the Muslim Council of Sweden (2005–2006) and Young Muslims of Sweden (2000–2002).
He was also a founding member of the organization Swedish Muslims for Peace and Justice, a Muslim peace movement, as well as a strong supporter of the Swedish peace movement. He was a member of the board of the Green Party between 2003 and 2011. Kaplan lives in Stockholm, and is married with two children.

Mr. Ravi Singh is the Secretary General and CEO of WWF-India since 2003. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Singh was the General Manager and Head, Multi National Corporates, Deutsche Bank, Mumbai.  He started his career as a Lecturer of History in Bhagat Singh College, Delhi University after his Masters in History from St. Stephen’s College in 1975. He joined The Chartered Bank (now Standard Chartered Bank) in 1976 and Deutsche Bank in 1985. Beside his professional achievements in the corporate sector, Mr. Singh has had an abiding interest in the conservation of nature and working for India.
 He has been involved in conservation related issues since 1976 and has been a member of several conservation organizations, which included WWF and the BNHS. As the head of WWF-India, the country’s largest conservation organization, Mr. Singh participates in national fora covering biodiversity and aspects of reducing human footprint. He played squash at national levels, is a keen traveler, a member of the Himalayan Club, an avid reader. His other interests include Indian History, High Altitude Trekking, Photography and Natural History. Some of the priorities areas of his work as the SG are to provide strategic direction to the conservation work of WWF-India and to add qualitatively to the WWF’s contribution to conservation. WWF works with Species, Forestry, Freshwater & Wetlands, Climate Change, Education, Law, Policy, Sustainable Livelihoods and Business Sustainability in India. Another important focal area is the work with local communities and business corporations to include their involvement and commitment to the cause of conservation. In his position as the head of India’s largest conservation organisation, Mr. Singh has participated several national fora including the Standing Committee of the Indian Board of Wildlife, as a member of the Board of Directors of IIFM, and in Wildlife Boards of various states in India.  He was a member of WWF International’s Executive Committee. He was the Vice-President of the Himalayan Club and one of the founder members of the Eco-Tourism Society of India.

Arunabha Ghosh is CEO of the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), an independent, policy research institution in India. Arunabha conceptualised and led CEEW (http://ceew.in), since its founding in August 2010, to the top-ranked climate think-tank in India in 2013 and 2014. CEEW was ranked best in India (and South Asia) in several categories two years running in the Global Go To Think Tank Index.
With work experience in 35 countries and having worked at Princeton, Oxford, UNDP (New York) and WTO (Geneva), Arunabha advises governments, industry and civil society around the world. He is a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, Asia Society Asia 21 Young Leader, and fellow of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. He is a founding board member of the the Clean Energy Access Network (CLEAN) and is board member of the International Centre for Trade & Sustainable Development, Geneva. He writes a monthly column in the Business Standard. Dr Ghosh has advised the Prime Minister’s Office, several ministries, state governments and international organisations on: energy strategy; renewable energy policy; resource nexus and foreign and security policy implications; governance arrangements for water and sanitation; power sector reforms; environmental governance; innovation, technology and strategic industries; clean energy and trade disputes; sustainability finance; climate policy, technology and negotiations; governance of climate engineering; and global governance. He is a member of Track II dialogues with Bhutan, Israel, Pakistan, Singapore, Turkey and the United States, and formulated the Maharashtra-Guangdong Partnership on Sustainability. Dr Ghosh has presented to heads of state, India’s Parliament, the European Parliament, Brazil’s Senate, and other legislatures; and trained ministers in Central Asia. Arunabha is most recently co-author of Climate Change: A Risk Assessment (with David King, Daniel Schrag, Zhou Dadi and Qi Ye) and the forthcoming Human Development and Global Institutions (Routledge, 2016). He is currently working on two other books: Palgrave Handbook of the International Political Economy of Energy; and India’s Energy Scenarios and Choices. Many of his numerous papers, book chapters and policy reports are available at http://ceew.in/publications. His essays and columns have appeared in Nature, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the Times of India, The Hindu, India Today, Indian Express, Financial Express, Mint, Seminar, among others.
