Dear Naresh,
For 20 years I had the honor of serving as a United States Marine. I spent a significant portion of my career deployed, from Iraq to Afghanistan to the Far East. I still can’t conceive of a more honorable way to spend those years. It imbued me with a deep-rooted commitment to American ideals – ideals such as equality, freedom, the rule of law, and yes, human rights.
Once I took off the uniform I hoped to continue advocating policies consistent with these ideals that motivated me to join the Marine Corps in the first place. That’s why I decided to work with Human Rights First to help launch Veterans for American Ideals, a group that believes honor, courage, commitment, duty, and country are not just words, but values that embody our service and our entire nation.
Veterans for American Ideals is a nonpartisan group of veterans who share a belief that America is strongest and most secure when its policies and actions match its ideals. We dedicated parts of our lives to our country as citizen-soldiers, and we believe that commitment doesn’t stop, that we should continue to encourage America to live up to its ideals.
One of the key pillars of Human Rights First’s mission is coalition building, working with people from across the aisle to drive consensus on issues from torture to ensuring that those fleeing persecution can find refuge. By joining Veterans for American Ideals, you can become an integral part of this work.
Sincerely,
Scott Cooper
Director, National Security Outreach
