Kiran Matharu all set to defend her title
Kolkata, February 2, 2016: Kiran Matharu will look to defend her title in the 3rdLeg of the Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour at the historic Royal Calcutta Golf Club. She would like to draw inspiration from the fact that she registered her maiden win on the Tour at the same venue last year. The INR 6,00,000 event featuring 16 professionals and lone amateur Tvesa Malik will be played from 3rdto 5th February.
Overseas player Kiran Matharu has been in good form and is currently placed second in the 2016 Hero Order of Merit with total earnings of INR 2,38,000 in two appearances. She finished runner-up behind Delhi youngster Vani Kapoor in both the events at Ahmedabad, and will be the firm favourite at RCGC in Vani’s absence. Vani Kapoor and Amandeep Drall are both currently playing in Australia.
Kiran will be up against a strong field, and will face a stiff challenge from the likes of Smriti Mehra, Saaniya Sharma and Gursimar Badwal. Kapurthala’s Gursimar Badwal is currently placed fourth in the money list with total earnings of INR 1,61,000, followed by Chandigarh’s Saaniya Sharma in fifth place with total earnings of INR 1,47,000. Both players are expected to push hard for a victory at the event. Kolkata’s Smriti Mehra is currently placed eighth on the money list with total earnings of INR 1,08,500, and would like to see her name move up in the Order of Merit.
Hero Motocorp sponsored Bengaluru golfer Sharmila Nicollet will be making a comeback to the Tour and will be playing in her first event this year. She did not participate in the first two events, and will look to make an instant impact at RCGC. Other players to look out for are Kolkata’s Neha Tripathi, Pune’s Shweta Galande and the Delhi duo of Mehar Atwal and Ankita Tiwana.
The historic Royal Calcutta Golf Club is the second oldest golf course in the world, and the par 72 course is all set to host some of the best women players in the country.
DMA SUPPORTS DOCTOR’S STRIKE
Delhi Medical Association is supporting the Strike of Doctors, nursing and paramedical staff (all three corporations) working in municipal hospitals who have not been paid salaries for 4 months by government. Suffering and exploited doctors, nursing and paramedical staff amid a wave of fury.Doctors had been requesting and fighting for implementation of better services for patient and doctors in hospitals since last 3 months. They were promised to take action regarding the demands of doctors. But despite of repeated reminders, no communication has been made so far in this regards by the government. Considering the issue Delhi Medical Association is supporting all three corporations and highlight the issue and informed the press that how Delhi government is not paying their hard earned money and they are not ready anymore to get torture. DMA requests its members to wear Black Badges during their working hours to protest against government and support the doctors. DMA has also called upon its members to close down their medical establishments including clinics, nursing homes, labs etc. on Thursday, 4th Feb 2016, if the demands will not be fulfilled by the Government. DMA has also called upon to all the private hospitals to close down their OPD on Thursday, 11th Feb 2016. The Emergency services however shall be provided at all the centres. Arise Steel 42nd Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship: Defending champions Kerala girls and MP boys win on opening day
Puducherry, 2nd February 2016: The Arise Steel 42nd Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship tipped off at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium here in Puducherry today. On the morning of Day 1 of the tournament, girls’ defending champions Kerala got off to a resounding start with a big victory over West Bengal 48 to 17. Krisha Priya top scored for Kerala with 18 points. Last year’s runners up Chhattisgarh girls also picked up a comfortable victory defeating Delhi 89 to 36, led by Elizabeth Ekka’s 27 points. The Tamil Nadu girls started off their campaign with a victory over Haryana 80-58. Tamil Nadu’s Pavithra Sree scored a game-high 36 points against Haryana, who were led by Maika’s 32 points in the losing effort. Interestingly, the Haryana team lineup also featured Miraya Vadra, the daughter of Indian politician and member of the Congress party, Priyanka Vadra and businessman Robert Vadra. Miraya did put her skills on display for limited minutes during the game in the stadium named after her late grandfather, much to the delight of the media shutterbugs present at the venue.
In the boys’ games on the morning of Day 1, the Tamil Nadu and West Bengal boys were embroiled in a cracker of a matchup that ended after two extra time periods. Tamil Nadu held their nerve in the final minutes to clinch the 84-79 victory, relying on a balanced team effort led by Dhanush’s game-high 25 points. The Rajasthan boys also began on a positive note with a 91-79 victory over Andhra Pradesh. The Rajasthan boys’ team features the only foreign coach in the tournament, Marko Zarkovic from Serbia, who is the assistant coach for the team. Delhi and Punjab boys also picked up opening-day victories against Tripura and Goa respectively.
In the second half of the day, boys’ defending champions took the court in their first game against Maharashtra. The match turned out to be a thrilling contest that ended with the defending champs edging past Maharashtra 57 to 55, thanks to Pankaj Singh’s 26 points for the MP team. The other level 1 boys’ game between Odisha and Haryana also went down to the wire with only two points separating the teams once again. Odisha emerged winners of the contest defeating Haryana 61-59. Last year’s runners up, the Chhattisgarh boys, made short work of Chandigarh defeating them by a whopping 60-point margin to pick up their first victory.
The home teams, Puducherry boys and girls lost their opening day games against Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh respectively. The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place from 6 pm onwards at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium today.

About the 42nd Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship
The 42nd Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship is being organised in Puducherry from the 2nd to the 8th of February 2016 at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex. There are two indoor courts at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium along with one outdoor court in the complex dedicated to the tournament. This year’s event is being organised by the Puducherry Basketball Association under the aegis of the Basketball Federation of India. The Sub-Junior Nationals is an annual national tournament for U-14 boys’ and girls’ teams from states across India. This year’s tournament is witnessing the participation of 23 boys’ teams and 22 girls’ teams. Arise Steel is the main sponsor for the tournament.
The 41st Sub-Junior Nationals were conducted in Nashik, Maharashtra, where the Kerala girls and the Chhattisgarh boys emerged victorious clinching the gold medals. Chhattisgarh girls and boys were the second placed teams. The 2013 version tournament was conducted in Patna, Bihar. The Chhattisgarh teams won both the boys and the girls category last year, while the Madhya Pradesh boys and the Tamil Nadu girls finished runners-up respectively.
