Dipa Karmakar finishes misses bronze
India continues to be without a medal in the Rio Olympics, even after the ninth day of the events and with just one week remaining. Dipa Karmakar, who had created history by becoming the first Indian to qualify for a Gymnastics Final at the Games, missed by a whisker from winning a medal in Women’s Vault.
Dipa, who did a Produnova, a tough front handspring and two front somersaults, finished fourth with an average score of 15.066. The Bronze was given to Swiss Giuila Steingruber who had an average score of 15.216.
Earlier, the Indian Men’s Hockey team made a shock exit from the Games after they were humbled by Belgium 1-3 in the quarterfinals.
In Tennis, Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna failed to win give India its first medal of the Games as they lost the Mixed Doubles Bronze medal play-off. They gave way to the Czech team of Radek Stepanek and Lucie Hradecka by losing in straight sets, 1-6, 5-7. In the men’s singles Final, Briton Andy Murray grabbed the Gold after defeating Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in best of 5 games.
In Badminton, India’s shuttle queen and world number five Saina Nehwal crashed out. She was stunned by world No. 61 Maria Ulitina of Ukraine. PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth, however, progressed to the pre-quarterfinals keeping the medal hopes alive.
Indian shooters ended the Games without a medal showcasing a disappointing performance. In Boxing, Manoj Kumar failed to make the quarterfinals in the 64 kilogram weight class. He lost his Round-of-16 bout against Uzbekistan’s Fazliddin Gaibnazarov, 0-3. In Women’s Marathon, OP Jaisha ended 89th and Kavita Raut 120th.
