• 43rd Arise Steel Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship to tip off in Hyderabad from 1st October
  • India’s premier U13 Championship for boys and girls will be held at the Sports Authority of Telangana (SATS) Indoor Stadium in Saroornagar from 1st to 7thOctober
  • Madhya Pradesh boys and Chhattisgarh girls are the defending champions
  • National level basketball is returning to the city of Hyderabad after a gap of 13 years
  Hyderabad, 30th February 2016: The 43rd Arise Steel Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship for Boys and Girls 2016 is all set to tip off at the Sports Authority of Telangana (SATS) Indoor Stadium in Saroornagar in the city between 1st to 7th October. The championship is being organised by the Hyderabad District Basketball Association under the auspices of Telangana State Basketball Association (TBA) and the Basketball Federation of India (BFI).
  The Sub-junior or ‘mini’ nationals is annually held for boys and girls of the age 13 or younger and is the premier national level tournament at this entry level age group. As many as 22 matches per day will be played on a league cum knockout basis inside the two indoor courts within the stadium complex.
  While the Championship will tip off on the morning of 1st October itself, the opening ceremony will be held later in the afternoon from 4 pm onwards. Shri Bandaru Dattatraya, Honourable Union Minister for Labour and Employment will be the chief guest of the occasion. Other guests of honour will be Shri G Kishan Reddy (MLA and Floor Leader, BJLP Telangana), Shri A Dinakar Babu (IAS, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Sports Authority of Telangana) and Shri Aadhav Arjuna, Managing Director, Arise Industries and Agency Private Ltd.
  “I would like to thank our title sponsors Arise Steel for making this event possible, and for their continued patronage towards Indian basketball. The stadium is fully ready and we have arranged for accommodation, travel and food for all the participating teams and officials,” said Mr Norman Isaac, BFI executive committee member and General Secretary of the Telangana Basketball Association.
  National level basketball is returning to the city of Hyderabad for the first time in 13 years, after the 2003 Senior National Basketball Championship. In fact, the last time a national level tournament was held in unified Andhra Pradesh was the junior national championship in Anantapur back in 2007.
  Madhya Pradesh is the two time defending champions in the boys section while Chhattisgarh is the defending champion in the girls section from the 42nd edition held in Puducherry earlier this February. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana teams had finished 5th and 10th in the boys and girls sections respectively.

  Tournament Format and Structure

  Like all the other National Championships, the various state teams are divided into upper Level 1 and Lower Level 2. Within these levels, the teams are divided into various preliminary groups. Matches are played in a league format during the group stages followed by the knockout rounds. The championship follows a system of relegation and promotion, whereby the top teams from the lower Level 1 progress to the upper Level 2, while the bottom teams from Level 1 get relegated to Level 2 for the following edition.
  One unique rule only for the U13 level is that no player can play for more than 3 quarters in a game, and 10 out of 12 members in each team must play for at least 10 minutes in each match. This rule is to ensure competitive exposure to maximum number of players.

  About Basketball Federation of India

  The Basketball Federation of India or BFI is the governing and controlling body of basketball in India, and is responsible for the development and promotion of the sport at all levels. BFI has been involved in conducting camps, clinics, events, and training sessions at its academies for the development of basketball. BFI came into being in 1935 and took complete control over Indian basketball in 1950. Prior to that time, the Indian Olympic Association handled the conduct of Indian basketball championships. Since 1950, the BFI has been conducting various such championships, from the grassroots to senior team participation in international tournaments. In addition, the BFI has been responsible for the establishment of strong sub-junior and junior level programs. The BFI has to its credit produced several international players of repute, among them 17 have been bestowed with the honour of Arjuna Awards. Earlier in June 2015, 19-year-old Satnam Singh Bhamara made history by becoming the first Indian national to be drafted by an NBA team, when he was selected by the Dallas Mavericks. Amandeep takes lead on Day 2

New Delhi, 28th September 2016: Amandeep Drall carded 1 under 71 in the second round to jump into the lead in the 14th Leg of the Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour at the Delhi Golf Club here on Wednesday. Overnight leader Siddhi Kapoor could not replicate her first round heroics and is placed second with a total score of 147 after the second round. The INR 7,00,000 event will culminate tomorrow.

After having finished overnight in tied fourth position, Panchkula’s Amandeep Drall played with purpose and put up a much improved performance. She started cautiously, playing a bogey free front nine with a birdie on the 3rd hole. She carded another birdie in the latter half on the 17th hole, while dropping the lone shot of her round on the 16th to finish with a total score of 146.

Kolkata professional and rookie Siddhi Kapoor, who grabbed eyeballs with her first round performance, struggled with the conditions today. Her error prone round of 5 over 77 included four bogeys on the 4th, 12th, 15th and 16th holes along with a double on the 9th. She carded the lone birdie of her round on the 10th hole.

Delhi’s Mehar Atwal carded an even par round of 72 to take the third position. She carded three birdies on the 1st, 8th and 12th holes with an equal number of bogeys on the 4th, 7th and 15th to finish with a total score of 149 after 36 holes. Vani Kapoor too had a much better outing today, and is placed fourth with a total score of 150 after the second round. Her card of 2 over 74 on the day included two birdies on the 5th and 11thholes along with four bogeys on the 4th, 6th, 10th and 16th.

Kolkata’s Neha Tripathi, Kapurthala’s Gursimar Badwal, Chandigarh’s Saaniya Sharma, and Delhi’s Gaurika Bishnoi are all tied for the fifth position with identical totals of 151 after the penultimate round. Neha Tripathi carded 4 over 76 with three bogeys on the 3rd, 15th and 17th holes along with a double on the 16th. She carded the lone birdie of her round on the 12th hole. Gursimar Badwal carded 5 over 77 in the second round with three birdies on the 1st, 11th and 14th holes along with an equal number of bogeys on the 7th, 13th and 16th. However, a triple bogey on the 2nd hole, along with a double on the 10th spoilt her scorecard and she had to settle for the tied fifth position. Gaurika came up with a much better performance to jump seven places with a round of even par 72. She carded three birdies on the 4th, 8th and 14th holes while dropping shots on the 2nd, 3rd and 9th. Saaniya’s round of 3 over 75 included two birdies on the 13th and 18th holes along with bogeys on the 2nd, 3rd, 10th, 14th and 17th.

Pune’s Shweta Galande and amateur Shreya Ghei are tied for the ninth position with identical totals of 153, followed by Delhi’s Ankita Tiwana in the 11th position.

With the top half of the draw within a shot or two of each other, the final round tomorrow is likely to witness keen competition among the contenders.

Palpreet Singh signs NBA Development League contract

– The ACG-NBA Jump program winner becomes eligible for selection in NBA D League Draft –

Mumbai, September 28, 2016: Palpreet Singh, the winner of National Finals of ACG-NBA Jump, India’s first national basketball talent search program, signed NBA Development League contract.  The 21-year old will now become eligible for selection in the NBA D League Draft, which will be held in October.

The 6ft 9in hoopster, who has been training at the New York Athletic Club with coach Ross Burn in Manhattan, said he has trained hard and is confident of getting picked by a D League team in the draft.  “I am happy with the efforts I have put in and I will continue to work hard and make the most of this opportunity because not many get such a chance.”

Palpreet, who had impressed NBA champion Brian Shaw in the national finals of ACG NBA Jump held in the last week of February, was part of the national tryouts held on August 14, 2016 in New York.  Over 200 pro basketball hopefuls exhibited their talent in front of NBA D-League player personnel executives, coaches, and industry scouts that day.

Palpreet sounded confident despite knowing he had competed against over 200 other NBA aspirants.  “The competition is tough but it is great to know you are competing with the best to play in the best league in the world.”

Palpreet Singh was discovered as part of an NBA talent search in India.  There are more NBA talent searches planned in India and other countries as part of the league’s ongoing international initiatives.  The NBA is devoted to identifying and developing talent abroad both on and off the floor.

  Dear Friends, I am delighted to share with you the Annual Report of the Centre for Policy Research for 2015-16. This was an especially productive year at CPR. From field defining books to path breaking academic monographs, from a steady range of articles in learned journals to those in less learned journals serving the cause of public outreach, the outputs spanned subjects ranging from international relations to climate change law, India’s contemporary economy to political theory. We hope some of this work will convey the sense of intellectual excitement we experience at CPR. What we are particularly proud of is the fact that this intellectual effort has been undertaken in good faith, without preconception, prejudice or partisanship. I am constantly grateful that within CPR we are blessed with an environment where there is genuine curiosity, openness to evidence, an ability to play with different arguments and a genuine attempt to try and figure things out. We do not always succeed, but if our work conveys some of that sense of excitement, we will have succeeded. Going through the work listed here will not just be of academic interest: it will provide a sense of the big issues and arguments confronting India and its place in the world in different ways.
