US, Russia discuss possible Aleppo normalization

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke to his US counterpart John Kerry late Saturday, the ministry said in a statement. The two diplomats discussed possible ways to curb violence in Aleppo, as well as tensions over North Korea’s actions, and bilateral ties.
Russian and Syrian air raids on the rebel-held eastern half of the city of Aleppo have forced the closure of the largest hospital in the area and killed two people.
The Syrian American Medical Society, which supports the hospital, said it had been struck by barrel bombs.
There are also reports of Russian-backed Syrian government forces hitting Aleppo’s historic Old City. Clashes between government troops and rebels are occurring in several areas.
Russian and Syrian air forces resumed attacks on the rebel-held east of the city after a partial truce lapsed on 19 September. Government forces have also launched a ground offensive against the rebels.
The mounting civilian death toll has sparked international protests. The US says Russia is driving moderate rebels into the arms of jihadists.
Once Syria’s commercial and industrial hub, Aleppo has been divided roughly in two since 2012.
The UN says at least 400 civilians, including many children, have been killed in the city this week as a result of Russian and Syrian government attacks.

Chief Minister of Gujarat unveils the trophy for 2016 Kabaddi World Cup

Shri Vijay Rupani was joined by the captains of India, Argentina, England, Iran, Bangladesh and Kenya teams

Shri Vijay Rupani, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat unveiled the trophy for 2016 Kabaddi World Cup in the Vibrant Navratri Garba 2016 at GMDC ground in Ahmedabad today. Also present at the momentous occasion, were Shri Nitin Patel, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat, Mr. Deoraj Chaturvedi, CEO, International Kabaddi Federation; Mr. Anupam Goswami, Head – Kabaddi, Star Sports; Udit Sheth, Founder and MD, SE TransStadia along with captains of teams from India, Argentina, England, Iran, Bangladesh and Kenya participating in the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup.

The trophy symbolizes the essence of the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup. The swirling arc on the ‘waist’ of the trophy depicts the movement style in kabaddi while the carved out bold base defines the masculinity of the sport. The map on the outer surfaces flaring out symbolizes how Kabaddi is expanding its reach all across the globe. Weighing approximately 15 kilograms, the larger arcs on the trophy reflect the encircling of the globe through the cut-out on their surface. The globe in itself is smooth and catches the shadows of the world map on the larger arcs.

The tournament will commence from 7th October and will be held in Ahmedabad’s  state-of-the-art stadium, The Arena, by TransStadia. Hosts India will be facing South Korea on the opening day of the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup.

Star Sports is the official broadcaster of the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup. All matches will be telecast exclusively on the Star Sports network and Hotstar.

Bulgaria bans full-face veils

Bulgaria’s parliament on Friday banned the wearing of face veils in public in a move supporters said would boost security after Islamist militant attacks in Europe, but which drew criticism from Amnesty International.
The “burqa ban” law, pushed by the nationalist Patriotic Front coalition, echoes similar measures in western European countries such as France, the Netherlands and Belgium which have various laws banning the wearing of niqab full-face veils or head-to-toe burqas.
People who do not comply with the ban in Bulgaria face fines of up to 1,500 levs ($860), as well as suspension of social benefits.
The ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms refused to take part in the vote, which followed full-face veil bans in public in several Bulgarian towns. It said the ban would incite ethic and religious intolerance.
The ruling center-right GERB party said the ban has nothing to do with religious outfits but is only aimed at boosting national security and allowing better video surveillance.
“The law is not directed against religious communities and is not repressive,” senior GERB lawmaker Krasimir Velchev said. “We made a very good law for the safety of our children.”
According to the law, clothing hiding the face may not be worn in government offices, schools, cultural institutions and places of public recreation, but exceptions are allowed for health or professional reasons.
Human rights group Amnesty International said the ban violated Bulgarian women’s rights to freedom of expression and religion, calling it part of a disturbing trend of intolerance, xenophobia and racism in the Black Sea state.
“Women in Bulgaria should be free to dress as they please and to wear the burqa or the niqab as an expression of their identity or beliefs,” Amnesty International’s Europe Director John Dalhuisen said.
“Legitimate security concerns can be met with targeted restrictions on the complete covering of the face in well-defined high risk locations and not through a blanket discriminatory ban such as this.”
A minority of Muslim women in Europe cover their faces, but their veils have become symbols for some Europeans troubled by security, immigration and Muslim integration.
Muslims make up about 12 percent of Bulgaria’s 7.2 million population and most belong to a centuries-old community, largely ethnic Turks.
Muslim women in the country traditionally do not wear niqabs or burqas, except for a small group in the Roma community who have recently started, sparking tensions in the city of Pazarzhik.
Many Bulgarians are concerned that the migrant inflows into Europe may pose a threat to their predominantly Orthodox Christian culture and help radicalize part of the country’s long-established Muslim minority.

Gaganjeet Bhullar triumph at the Shinhan Donghae Open

Gaganjeet Bhullar putts his way to victory at Shinhan Donghae Open for sixth Asian Tour title; Soars into top-10 of Asian Tour rankings

Overcomes overnight five-shot deficit with a sublime final round of four-under-67

Incheon, Korea, October 2, 2016: India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar recorded his sixth Asian Tour triumph at the Shinhan Donghae Open in style as he overcame a five-shot overnight deficit with a sublime final round of four-under-67 which featured a brilliant display of putting.

Bhullar (68-66-68-67), who was tied fourth at the end of round three on Saturday, ended up with a tournament total of 15-under-269 to register a one-shot victory over Zimbabwean Scott Vincent and local lad Taewoo Kim of South Korea at the US$ 1 million event.

Gaganjeet, who last won on the Asian Tour in 2013, had hit a rough patch over the last two seasons thanks to a wrist injury he suffered in 2014. But the 28-year-old from Kapurthala announced his return into the top league of Asian golf with a clinical performance on Sunday that handed him his seventh international title.

Bhullar began the day on a positive note with a birdie on the second. However, a bogey on the fourth brought him back to level-par for the day. He then gathered momentum with consecutive birdies on the sixth and seventh, the latter being a 15-feet conversion.

Gaganjeet stepped on the accelerator with birdies on the 10th, 12th, 13th and 14th to build an imposing four-shot lead. The strapping six-footer was in prime putting form as he sank a 30-footer on the 10th and two more putts from 12 to 15 feet on the 13thand 14th. He unleashed a terrific tee shot on the par-3 12th which set up a three-feet birdie conversion.

Bhullar had a momentary scare when he bogeyed the 16th and 17th but a par on the closing 18th turned out to be good enough to seal the title as Vincent couldn’t birdie the last to take the match into a playoff even as it drizzled at the Bears Best Cheongna Golf Club.

Bhullar said, “I had no idea that I was leading by three after the 15th. That’s when I looked at the leaderboard for the first time today. When I realized that I was ahead by three, it gave me confidence and I thought I was playing well and I just needed to continue to focus and stick to my routine.

“The goal was to make a good start to the day and I achieved that by being two-under through the front-nine. I kept the momentum going thereafter. The birdies on the 10, 12, 13 and 14 were crucial as it could’ve swung either way on that stretch. I hit most fairways and greens today except for a couple at the end and that was good enough for a win.

“This win means a lot to me. The last time I won was back in 2013. I’ve gone through one of the lowest phases of my career over the last two seasons when I also suffered a wrist injury. I lost my European Tour card and my winner’s status on the Asian Tour in the last two years. I’m glad and proud of myself that I’ve managed to overcome all the difficulties through my hard work and determination. I thank my coach and my family for all their support that helped me in getting my career back on track,” added Bhullar.

Bhullar thus became the second Indian to win the Shinhan Donghae Open after Jeev Milkha Singh who won it back in 1994. The win has propelled Gaganjeet from 61st place to 10th position in the Asian Tour Order of Merit. He is also likely to make major gains in the world rankings where he is currently placed 674th. The rankings will be updated on Monday.

Uttam Singh Mundy, Director, PGTI, said, “On behalf of PGTI, I extend my heartiest congratulations to Gaganjeet Bhullar for his well-deserved victory at the Shinhan Donghae Open. This win signals a welcome return to form for Gaganjeet whose hard work and perseverance have helped him fight his way back into the top bracket of the Asian Tour. We’re proud of Gaganjeet’s performance and wish him all the best for the future.”

Among the other Indians, Khalin Joshi (68-69-69-71) fired a final round of even-par-71 to grab a share of 15th place at seven-under-277 while Jyoti Randhawa (71-71-71-71) who shot four scores of even-par-71, ended tied 54th with a total of even-par-284.
