DONALD PICKS MICHAEL FLYNN AS NSA
US President-elect Donald Trump has announced key Cabinet picks, with the post of National Security Adviser going to his military Adviser Michael Flynn. Mr Flynn is a retired United States Army Lieutenant General and former director of the Defence Intelligence Agency. Flynn served as Mr Trump’s top military advisor during the Presidential campaign.
Mr Trump chose Republican Senator Jeff Sessions as his Attorney General and Congressman Mike Pompeo as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), both known for being staunch conservatives. Flynn would not require US Senate confirmation, unlike Sessions and Pompeo.
Marrakesh: 200 countries including India adopt workplan for implementation of Paris Climate Agreement by 2018.
200 countries, including India, today adopted a work plan for the implementation of Paris climate agreement by 2018 during an important UN summit in Marrakesh.
After two weeks of negotiations, the Marrakesh climate change summit also underline the urgent need for early action on part of developed countries for emission reduction in accordance to their commitments in the Kyoto protocol which still has four years to go before its expiry in 2020.
With discussions centred mainly on procedural issues, the Marrakesh meeting went into over time last night with many countries including India raising some concerns over a few draft proposals. The decision sets up the stage for an early implementation of the Paris agreement which was negotiated as a successor regime to the Kyoto protocol for the post 2020 period. Paris agreement finalised in December last year entered into effect in less than a year.
Demonetization to curb corruption, terror funding: Rajnath
Home Minister Rajnath Singh has said, demonetization of high value currency notes will curb corruption and funding to terrorism.
In a statement, Mr Singh thanked people for supporting the move despite facing inconvenience. He said, the initiative will bring probity in political and administrative work and described the decision as historic, bold and in the national interest.
Mr Singh said, Government is taking every step to ease hardships being faced by people and the situation will normalise soon.
The Minister added that the decision will bridge the gap between the rich and the poor.
Union Minister of Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad said, demonetisation is showing results and more than 4 lakh crore rupees came to banks and all is clean money.
He said, extremists are finding their financial backbone completely broken and the country’s economy is surging and security getting strengthened.
Turkish asylum requests in Germany more than double this year
More than 4,400 Turkish citizens have applied for asylum in Germany this year, the government said Friday, with numbers up since a failed coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Among them are several Turkish military officers stationed at German’s Ramstein NATO air base, DPA has reported. On Friday, Germany’s Office for Migration and Refugees said that this year it had received 4,437 political asylum requests to the end of October from Turks, compared to 1,767 during all of last year. Numbers had steadily ticked up from 275 in July to 485 in October, it said, cautioning however that the rise could not be tied directly to the coup attempt, given the long time lags for asylum applications.
Slovenia says nearly 900kg of drugs seized in major bust
Police in Slovenia say they have seized nearly 900 kilograms of drugs and detained 10 suspects in the biggest bust in the small Alpine nation in years. Police said Friday they confiscated drugs include hashish, cocaine, heroin, amphetamines and cannabis with an estimated street value of more than $21 million. Authorities have also issued international arrest warrants for three suspects in the Netherlands. They say the drugs were trafficked in several European countries
Stoltenberg had ‘good talk’ with Trump on NATO future
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said Friday he had had a positive talk with US President-elect Donald Trump on the future and importance of the US-led alliance, amid concerns in Europe about Washington’s commitment. “Good talk with US President-elect… We both underlined the enduring importance of NATO and increased defense spending,” Stoltenberg tweeted.
Spain arrests two on suspicion of Islamist militant activity
Spanish police arrested two Moroccan citizens on Saturday in Madrid and Barcelona on suspicion of recruiting young people as Islamist militants via the internet, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. Since Spain raised its national security threat alert in 2015 in response to Islamist attacks in Paris, police have arrested 163 people suspected of militant activity.
Western Japan jolted by 5.4 magnitude quake
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 shook western Japan on Saturday but there was no immediate reports of damage and a tsunami warning was not issued. The epicentre of the earthquake, which occurred at 11:48 a.m. (0248 GMT), was in Wakayama prefecture, western Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world’s most seismically active areas. Japan accounts for about 20 percent of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

Textile minister distributes PAHCHAN identity cards to artisan of Gujarat

Union Textile Minister Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani distributed PAHCHAN identity cards to artisans of five clusters of Gujarat namely Jamnagar, Naroda, Surendranagar, Amreli and Kalol. She also announced to provide training 20 artisans of each of these five clusters under Guru Shishya Parampara where nationally acclaimed designers will come to give training to the artisans.
The Minister announced that artisans belongs to minority, Schedule caste/Schedule Tribe and BPL families will be provided free tool kit as per their art. She said the Pahchan card will give national identity to the artisans and they will be covered under national database. Artisans can get benefit of any government scheme through this pahchan card. She announced that the ministry will organize insurance camps in February at the places where artisans live and provide them credit guarantee scheme and insurance at their doorstep.
The camp for “PEHCHAN” was launched on 7th October, 2016 nationwide, to ensure a unique identity to the handicraft artisans of the nation. The artisan cards being distributed to the artisans shall essentially provide the following benefits:
· Easy loan, Insurance and Credit guarantee.
· Easy to avail benefits of the schemes run by Government of India.
· Easy to participate in any domestic/ international fair/event etc.
· The artisan can get the benefit of life insurance and Rs. 1200 per year to artisan’s children studying between class IX and class XII.
The event shall coincide with Thematic Exhibition on Handicrafts products being organized with effect from 19th to 24thNovember, 2016. The Exhibition will remain open for public till 24th of November 2016.
The fair has been conceptualized with a view to provide direct marketing platform for innovative products developed by 20 Handicrafts Artisans form all over India supported and promoted by Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India covering different crafts like Tie & Dye, Patchwork, Embroidery & Jewellery. Different types of craft are on display with live demonstration during this period. The event will showcase the best of Indian Handicrafts in quality, design and versatility from all over the country. This programme is being organized as an exclusive fair for Handicraft products in India at a grand scale to increase visibility of the products in domestic market.
The programme will also benefit the artisans from all over India who are unable to participate in the International Fairs due to high cost. The space rental and infrastructure shall be provided free of cost to these participants.
The fair is being promoted and marketed through Council of Handicrafts Development Corporations (COHANDS), with financial assistance from the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India.
Dr. Nirmalaben Wadhwani, Minister of state for women and child development, Government of Gujarat, Shri Kiritbhai Solanki, Member of Parliament, Ahmedabad West and Shri Alok Kumar, Development Commissioner Handicraft were also present on the occasion.

China Open: PV Sindhu to play finals today |
In Badminton, Rio Olympics Silver medalist PV Sindhu will play in the semi-finals of China Open Superseries Premier tournament in Fuzhou today. Sindhu, seeded seventh in the tournament, will take on sixth placed Korean Ji Hyun Sung.Both players have met 8 times in the past, with Sindhu winning 5 of those games. Besides bagging a Silver in Rio, Sindhu has just one title to her name this season – Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold which she won in January. Sindhu is the lone Indian to have made the semi-finals of the China Open. Fourth seed Saina Nehwal had crashed out in the opening round.
