PM Modi wins reader’s poll for TIME Person of the Year
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won the online reader’s poll for TIME Person of the Year, beating out other world leaders, artists and politicians as the most influential figure in 2016 among people who voted. The magazine’s editors decide the final Person of the Year. Modi won with 18 percent of the vote when the poll closed Sunday at midnight, TIME said. He placed well ahead of his closest contenders, including Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Julian Assange, who all received 7 percent of the ‘yes’ vote. Modi also placed far ahead of other prominent figures of this year, like Mark Zuckerberg (2 percent) and Hillary Clinton (4 percent).
China warns against obstruction of Iran nuclear deal
Implementation of the Iran nuclear deal should not be “affected by any changes in the domestic situations” of countries involved, China’s foreign minister warned Monday, as US president-elect Donald Trump threatens to abandon it. The agreement’s implementation is the “joint responsibility and duty of all parties” and“should not be affected by any changes in the domestic situations of the countries concerned”, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi told a press conference after meeting his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif. “What is important is to honor commitments and place emphasis on good faith when it comes to differences or possible differences” over the deal, he said.
Uzbekistan’s acting president wins election overwhelmingly
Uzbek election officials say that acting President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has overwhelmingly won a tightly controlled presidential election. Mirziyoyev garnered 88.61 percent of the vote, according to the head of the Central Election Commission. Murza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov said in Tashkent Monday that Mirziyoyev got 15.9 million votes. Sunday’s poll was the first election in the country since the August death of Islam Karimov, who ruled for 27 years. Uzbekistan, Central Asia’s most populous nation, is rich in natural resources and borders Afghanistan, making it of strategic interest to Russia, the US and China.
