New Delhi, 27th January, 2017: 19th edition of National School of Drama’s International Drama Festival Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2017 kicks off in the capital on 1st February, 2017. This year in this 21 day festival, theatre lovers of 6 Indian cities including New Delhi, Kurukshetra, Pune, Agartala, Hyderabad and Patna would be treated to scintillating theatre performances from across India and 12 other nations including England, Russia, Italy, Israel, Turkey, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Romania, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh.
National School of Drama, the premier Theatre Institute of India, rings in 2017 with its annual drama extravaganza in the form of 19th Bharat Rang Mahotsav which will be commencing on 1st February and culminating on 21st February, 2017. Bharat Rang Mahotsav’s this years’ schedulefeatures 94 theatre performances by renowned theater groups from different parts of India and 15 foreign productions. These performances in their various forms on the same platform promises theatre aficionados watching these productions to be entertained, educated, enlightened and enriched by these performances.
As a part of concerted effort by NSD to take the best of theatre performances across India this year, Parallel Festivals of Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2017 will travel to 5 Indian cities of Kurukshetra (3rd to 8th February), Agartala (5th to 10thFebruary), Patna (7th to 12th February), Pune(9th to 14th February) and Hyderabad (11th to 16th February). Apart from organizing in NSD’s own centre in Agartala and independently by NSD in Pune, in Kurukshetra it will be in collaboration with Harayana Kala Parishad; in Patna in collaboration with Department of Culture, Government of Bihar; and finally at Hyderabad it will be in collaboration with Department of Culture & Languages, Government of Telengana.
This edition of International Drama Festival will reflect the various facets of Indian theatre like Classical, Moderns, Indian Narratives and Folk Performances to the audience. The Indian Narratives on show will include Marsiya, Kirtan and Chakiyar Koothu. This year’s theatre carnival will include 3 Tributary Plays (as a tribute to Indian Theatre Masters who recently left for heavenly abode like Kavalam Narayan Pannikar, Heisnam Kanhailal and Prem Matiyani), 6 Diploma Productions and also 5 plays by living Theatre Luminaries from across the country like Ms. Sonal Mansingh, Shri Bibhash Chakravati, Dr Arjun Deo Charan, Shri D P Sinha and Prof. Suresh Bharadwaj.
The 2017 edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav, apart from the theatre performances on the stage will also feature Living Legend Series, Master Classes, Youth Forum and Director’s Meet as an integral part of this international Theatre fiesta. Scientifically designed Workshops on Patachitra, Kaawad and Gond Paintings will be open to all and add towards the education of usage of Fine Art in Theatre making. If this was not all, Bharat Rang Mahotsav this year will also include 10 traditional folk theatre performances from across the country making it the ultimate platform of interaction and education of theatre.
19th Bharat Rang Mahotsav will also have some very serious and pertinent discussions like “Whose Theatre is it anyway?” as a part of World Theatre Forum and “Actor at Vanishing Point” being explored by eminent Indian and International personalities who converge during this yearly Theatre congregation in New Delhi.
Many popular Indian and International theatre personalities, scholars, littérateurs would also be a vital part of this year’s Bharat Rang Mahotsav’s Allied Programmes.
National School of Drama has produced undoubtedly great Theatre talents in the country. Any institute which has such distinction needs to take on a lot of responsibility. Recently, NSD has on the National front done a lot of work by sometimes reviving and sometimes showcasing rural, urban, tribal, folk and modern theatre across the country. On the Institutional level as well extraordinary work has been done to cover the length and breadth of the country, by imparting education, with presence and through workshops & festivals. If that was not all, NSD has also bolstered its presence on the World Forums of Theatre as the current chair of Asia Pacific Bureau of Theatre Schools and vice-chair of Global Alliance of Theatre Schools (GATS).
Just as Art Direction is an integral part of all Theatre performances, this year also NSD Campus ambience will turn into that of an Indian Festival Mela which will cater to all the five human senses. Renowned Art Director, Jayant Deshmukh promises to turn the NSD Campus into a sprawling Maharaja’s Mahal of 1920’s complete with colonnades, domes and arches. Statues of different hues and sizes including one column which will have Masks with different expressions; a life size entwined statue of Man and Woman; and a huge statue of all NSD Directors till date, from the legendary Alkazi to present incumbent Waman Ji. The fiesta ambience will also include a Theatre Bazaar with around 50 kiosks including aFood Court which would be abuzz with Ambience performances which will keep visitors busy with their colourful productions. This year Ambience performances including Naad Swarm; Dhol Cholam; Laddakh Dance; Pung Dance; Bamboo Dance; Manipuri Martial Arts & Naga Dance; Dandiya; Bihu; Thanghta; Chau Dance; Nautanki; Haryanvi Faag; Light Dance; Bhawai, Garba & Kalbelia; Puppet Show; Laavni; Fisherfolk Dance; Krishna Raas and Kachchi Ghodi will happen at two temporary amphitheatres.
The performances of Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2017 will be held at Abhimanch, Open Air Theatre, Bahumukh and Sammukh at the NSD Campus as well as LTG Auditorium, Kamani Auditorium and Shri Centre for Performing Arts at Mandi House, New Delhi. Tickets will be available at the NSD Box Office (10AM to 4PM) and at the website http://eticket.nsd.gov.in/ in denominations of Rs.50, Rs.100, Rs.200, Rs.300, Rs.400 as per schedule.

The Bharat Rang Mahotsav was started around two decades ago by the NSD in order to contribute to the growth and development of theatre across the country with the aim of providing a platform for theatre performances and interaction. From being a national festival that presented the work of some of the most creative theatre workers in India, it has grown into an international event, hosting theatre companies from around the world, and is today acknowledged as the largest theatre festival of Asia dedicated solely to theatre. In addition to the national and international performances that are staged during the Festival, the fare also includes exhibitions, installations, interactive sessions with directors and performers for the general public and professionals, a vibrant theatre café, open forums and meetings and a shorter festival in another city to which some of the productions travel. National School of Drama
The National School of Drama is one of the foremost theatre training institutions in the world and the only one of its kind in India. It was set up by the Sangeet Natak Akademi as one of its constituent units in 1959. In 1975, it became an independent entity and was registered as an autonomous organization under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, fully financed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Training in the School is highly intensive and is based on a thorough, comprehensive, carefully planned syllabus which covers every aspect of theatre and in which theory is related to practice.
