Kailash Cartographies Kailash Cartographies will feature artists from India, China, Nepal and the US who will consider this important peak in the Himalayan mountain range both as a location through which to understand issues of ecology and climate change and as a metaphorical and spiritual location that functions as a locus for grounding and identification for people who live far from the site. This exhibition is a collaboration between members of the India China Institute, Parsons AMT, the School of Media Studies and the SJDC Gallery. The exhibit is part of ICI’s ongoing Sacred Himalaya Initiative research project focused on Mount Kailash in Tibet. To learn more about this exciting event visit our Events Calendar.

Featured guests and speakers for this conference include Karenna Gore, Steve Paulson, David Rothenberg, Ed Bernbaum and Greg Cajete. NEW INITIATIVE China India Scholar-Leaders Announced The India China Institute at The New School is pleased to introduce our first Cohort of China India Scholar-Leaders. This new Fellowship offers an intensive 18-month professional development experience for junior scholars focused on the theme of Prosperity and Inequality in India and China. The Fellows will be coming to New York City in May for a month-long academic residency. Meet our eight new Fellows and learn more about them in this highlight post. MAHENDRA LAMA The Gradual Decay We are pleased to share a recent post from former India China Fellow Mahendra Lama. In his latest article in the Kathmandu Post, “The Gradual Decay,” he discusses the various political dynamics of Darjeeling tea in India and the 1951 Tea Plantation Act. Read more... L.H.M. Ling Colonial Fear and Desire in 2016 A second article by Professor Ling in the Huffington Post, “Colonial Fear and Desire in 2016,” raises important questions about the collapse of globalization discourse, white nationalist politics, and colonialism today. Read more... NEW PUBLICATIONS We are excited to share a new edited book from our 3rd Cohort ICI Fellows on environmental sustainability. More details about the book are on the Springer site. "This book represents an important contribution to understanding and promoting environmental sustainability in a millennial context in these two ‘civilizational twins'... I highly recommend this important publication to researchers, designers, planners, policy makers, students, and others who are working on environmental sustainability in China or India and worldwide." —Nitin Desai, Former Under-Secretary General for Economic & Social Affairs, UN   We are excited to share a new publication from former ICI Postdoctoral Fellow Georgina Drew on Hinduism and the political ecology of dams in India. Drew has woven the various arguments about damming the Ganges into an engaging narrative in this model of careful research and clear writing."   —Mary Evelyn Tucker, co-editor of theRoutledge Handbook of Religion and Ecology 2017 STUDENT FELLOWS We want to congratulate the 10th Cohort of New School students who were awarded a Starr Travel and Research Grant to support their academic engagement on India and China. Students undergo a competitive application and interview process and commit to conducting field research in India or China for a minimum of three weeks during the spring or summer. AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF INDIAN STUDIES FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION The American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) invites applications from scholars from all disciplines who wish to conduct their research in India. Junior fellowships are given to doctoral candidates at universities in the U.S. to conduct research for their dissertations in India for up to eleven months. Senior long-term (six to nine months) and short-term (four months or less) fellowships are available for scholars who hold the Ph.D. degree. Scholarly/Professional development fellowships are available to scholars and professionals who have not previously worked in India. Creative and Performing Arts fellowships are available to practitioners of the arts of India.
