Burma Campaign UK News Update

Dear friend
UN orders Rohingya investigation

Earlier this year we stepped up our campaign for a UN Commission of Inquiry into the Rohingya crisis in Burma. We called on the British government to support an Inquiry and ensure that its establishment was included in the UN Human Rights Council resolution on Burma in March.

Sadly, the British government once again failed to step up and prioritise human rights in Burma, they didn’t back a full Commission of Inquiry. The European Union, which drafts the Resolution, did not include an inquiry in its draft resolution, but there was so much anger at their failure to act that they were forced to put forward a new draft which included a compromise, the establishment of a Fact Finding Mission.

The Mission will investigate what is taking place and report back to the UN. It falls short of the full Commission of Inquiry we were calling for but still has the potential to conduct a thorough investigation and make recommendations for action to ensure justice and accountability, helping to end the killings, rapes and violent attacks. We’ll keep you updated on the progress of the investigation.

Aung San Suu Kyi interview

The BBC has conducted a rare interview with Aung San Suu Kyi. Normally she refuses to do interviews with media. You can see the full interview here.

Frankly, some of her responses on human rights violations are very disappointing. The United Nations has already concluded that human rights violations against ethnic groups in Burma could constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity. Hopefully the UN Fact Finding Mission will help further establish the facts of what is taking place and who is responsible, making it harder to deny the truth and avoid taking action.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the campaign for a UN investigation. We are finally making progress, and could not have done so without your support.
