CHINA, RUSSIA JOINT NAVAL DRILLS

China’s Defense Ministry said, it will stage joint naval drills with Russia this summer.
The ministry said on Sunday that in late July the exercises will take place in the Baltic Sea. In mid-to-late September, they will take place in the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk.
State-run China Central Television reported that 3 military vessels, including a destroyer and a supply ship, left the southern island province of Hainan on Sunday.
The TV station added that the 3 ships are sailing for the Russian city of St. Petersburg, and elsewhere, and will take part in the drills in the Baltic Sea.
China and Russia have been conducting annual joint naval exercises since 2012.

MOON JAE-IN APPOINTED A FEMALE FOREIGN MINISTER

South Korean President Moon Jae-in officially appointed a female diplomat, Kang Kyung-wha, as foreign minister on Sunday.
Kang served as a special advisor on policy to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres until last month.
Kang is South Korea’s first female foreign minister. She will help to prepare a summit with the US later this month, and deal with North Korean issues, including the country’s nuclear and missile development.
Addressing  national assembly hearing earlier this month, Kang said it is international practice to observe the 2015 agreement with Japan on the issue of those referred to as wartime comfort women.
However, she also suggested that Japan must take sincere measures that reach the hearts of those women, indicating that the content of the deal is insufficient.
Members of opposition parties opposed Kang’s appointment, pointing to allegations that she falsified her address to allow her daughter to transfer to another school, and under-reported the profit she made from selling property.
Moon dismissed the criticism, stressing that Kang’s capability is recognized by the international community, and the majority of people support her appointment.NHK

ATHER ENERGY HIRES CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER, DR. VENKATESH PADMANABHAN

Final Logo with ATHER

Bangalore, 20th June, 2017: Ather Energy, the smart electric two-wheeler start-up, today announced the new addition of Dr. Venkatesh Padmanabhan as the Chief Operating Officer. Fondly known as Venki, he will head supply chain, quality, manufacturing, and service delivery at Ather.
“For my 10 years in India, I have been wrestling with this singular question: can we, will we create world beating consumer hardware products and brands from scratch?  We are great in value engineering, local sourcing manufacturing and even at detail engineering of designs of others. But what about solving hairy consumer problems with our own design, and our own brand?” said Venki. “When I met Tarun, Swapnil and their team at Ather, it was like a lightning bolt hit me. They surely have great brand, design and engineering mojo and are in early stages of building detail engineering and manufacturing capability. I thought I had value to add to this exciting quest and I signed up.”
“Venki’s career has taken him to multiple countries and multiple automotive companies. He has a strong knowledge base of the operational requirements for an automotive company, specially two wheelers. His network and his experience in the industry is a valuable asset for a young company.” said Tarun Mehta, CEO, Ather Energy. “Ather is a young company, building on a new platform with a nascent to often non-existent vendor ecosystem. Venki’s exposure to vendors and manufacturing processes in India will prove a strategic advantage as we close in on the production of the S340.”
After 15 years at General Motors, in 2004 Dr. Padmanabhan joined Daimler Chrysler’s (DCX) Chrysler Division to support the integration of Lean Manufacturing in its diverse operations and later also worked at Mercedes Car Division. He was brought to India in 2007 as Managing Director of Chrysler’s first South East Asia Global Sourcing Centre in Chennai from where the company today sources close to $1B every year in automotive parts.
He joined Royal Enfield as Chief Operating Officer in 2008 and rose to the position of Chief Executive Officer in 2011. During this period, with two successful launches of the Classic and Thunderbird single cylinder UCE based motorcycles, the company saw a threefold increase in sales and twenty fold increase in profits. Royal Enfield now is a brand reborn and thriving in India and 45 other countries.
In 2013, Dr. Padmanabhan served as the MD & CEO of EICL (English Indian Clays Limited) to help recast a 75 year old $80M Kaolin Clay and Starch Producer into a modern innovation driven specialty chemicals company. He moved to Cyient in October 2015 to integrate its acquisition of Rangsons Electronics into extending the detail engineering offerings of its aerospace, defense, rail, medical and consumer business units into complete life cycle offerings.

EDOUARD PHILIPPE ASKED TO FORM GOVERNMENT

French President Emmanuel Macron has re-appointed Edouard Philippe as prime minister after the weekend’s legislative run-off vote and asked him to form the next government by Wednesday.
Sources at Macron’s office said in Paris that Yesterday’s vote saw Macron’s centrist group, the Republic on the Move (REM), secure a massive victory in the National Assembly, giving him a mandate to pursue a pro-EU, business-friendly agenda.
On Sunday’s final round of the general elections, French President Emmanuel Macron has secured a clear majority in the parliament.
“Republic on the Move,” a new party Macron set up, won a majority with 308 seats in the 577-seat lower house. Macron’s strength will reach 350 seats, if combined with the seats won by his election partner, the centrist party.
The center-right Republicans won 113 seats. The center-left Socialists got 29 seats. That’s a sharp reduction from the numbers the once powerful parties enjoyed before the election. The far-right National Front took only 8 seats.
Macron’s “Republic on the Move,” and the centrist party fielded candidates in more than 500 constituencies. Half of the candidates were ordinary citizens with no political experience.
Macron, who has been short of support from established political forces, now has a power base with his party’s majority in parliament.
Prime Minister Edouard Philippe told reporters that the people have chosen hope over anger, and also trust over an inward-looking attitude. He added that one year ago, no one had imagined the politics would change so much.
The voter turnout in Sunday’s elections was the lowest-ever at about 42 percent, encouraging opposition parties to continue criticizing Macron’s administration. The new President may need to increase the public trust by trying hard to succeed in specific policy areas.
France’s defense minister Sylvie Goulard quit the government on Tuesday saying she did not want to be considered in the coming reshuffle because of the investigation overshadowing her party’s affairs in the European parliament. Goulard is a member of Modem, the centrist party that allied itself to President Emmanuel Macron’s party in the presidential and legislative elections, but which now faces an inquiry over the way it hired parliamentary assistants in the European parliament. “The honor of our armies, that of the men and women who serve… should not be mixed up with controversies that have nothing to do with them,” she said
