Trump declares North Korea state sponsor of terrorism
US President Donald Trump has declared North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism, a move that allows the Trump administration to impose additional sanctions on Pyongyang over its nuclear and missile programmes.
North Korea had been removed from the list of state sponsor of terrorism under the George W Bush administration in 2008.
Announcing the designation at the start of a White House Cabinet meeting in Washington yesterday, Mr Trump said in addition to threatening the world by nuclear devastation, North Korea repeatedly supported acts of international terrorism including assassinations on foreign soil.
President Trump said this designation will impose further sanctions and penalties on North Korea. He said the Treasury Department will today announce an additional round of sanctions against North Korea.
The House Foreign Relations Committee welcomed the move. Meanwhile, in a briefing at White House, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said that the move to designate North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism will help dissuade third parties from supporting Pyongyang.
Angela Merkel prefers new vote
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she would prefer new elections to leading a minority government, after a breakdown in coalition talks plunged the country into political crisis.
The Chancellor also said she did not see any reason to resign from her post despite the failed negotiations. The FDP liberals pulled out of talks with Mrs Merkel’s CDU/CSU bloc and the Greens. Germany President Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged parties to make compromises for the country’s “well-being”.Mrs Merkel faces her biggest challenge in 12 years as the Chancellor.
Myanmar hopes for deal with Bangladesh on Rohingya refugees
EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said “We encourage both Bangladesh and Myanmar to work bilaterally [on] this issue with the support of the EU and with the international community.”
She also expressed a desire to see an end to the violence and flow of refugees as well as guaranteed full humanitarian access to Rakhine State and the safe, sustainable repatriation of refugees.
The ASEM summit brings together representatives from 51 Asian and European countries plus the European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The biennial summit meeting and foreign ministers’ meeting are held alternately in Asia and Europe.
Myanmar’s State Counsellor and Foreign Affairs Minister Aung San Suu Kyi today said, she hopes that talks with Bangladesh this week will result in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the safe and voluntary return of Rohingya Muslims who fled to Bangladesh in the past three months.
Speaking to media at the end of a meeting of senior officials at an Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), in Myanmar’s capital Naypyitaw, she said discussions would be held with the Bangladesh foreign minister tomorrow and day after.
Suu Kyi said she hope that talks would result in an MOU signed quickly, which would enable to start the safe and voluntarily return of all of those who have gone across the border.
She said Myanmar would follow the framework of an agreement reached in the 1990s to cover the earlier repatriation of Rohingya, who had fled to Bangladesh to escape previous bouts of ethnic violence.
European foreign ministers are set to press the government of Myanmar on its handling of the Rohingya crisis at a biennial meeting with their Asian counterparts opening in Naypyitaw on Monday.
The Asia-Europe Meeting of foreign ministers takes place as the host country increasingly comes under fire for the alleged persecution of the Muslim Rohingya by its security forces.
Ruling ZANU-PF to launch impeachment proceedings against President Robert Mugabe
The ruling party ZANU-PF, is to launch impeachment proceedings against President Robert Mugabe today. In a statement, the party said it has instructed the chief whip to proceed with impeachment processes.
It said a motion to strip Mugabe of the Presidency would be presented to Parliament today, and the process could take just two days. The motion accuses the 93-year-old of charges including allowing his wife to usurp constitutional power. Votes are expected to be held in both the National Assembly and the Senate – the two parliamentary houses on whether to begin impeachment proceedings.
If they pass by a simple majority, a joint committee from both chambers will be appointed to investigate removing the President. Then, if the committee recommends impeachment, the President can then be removed if both houses back it with two-thirds majorities.
Zimbabwe’s former vice-president, Emmerson Mnangagwa whose sacking led to last week’s army takeover, today urged President Robert Mugabe to respect public opinion and step down immediately.
In a statement he said president should heed the clarion call by the people so that the country can move forward and preserve his legacy. Mnangagwa said he fled abroad two weeks ago when he learned of a plot to kill him, and he would not return until he was sure of his security.
