China detains hundreds of Tibetans
A New York-based human rights group says China has detained hundreds of Tibetans who returned from India after attending a religious event.

Human Rights Watch says the Tibetans have been placed in hotels and military facilities in Lhasa to undergo investigation and re-education.

The group says the Tibetans visited Bodh Gaya, a religious site in India, where they attended lectures overseen by the Dalai Lama.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Liu Weimin said Friday that the details of the case are not clear.

But the spokesperson defended recent measures such as enforcing patriotic education and banning foreign tourists from visiting Tibetan residential areas.

He said the measures are necessary for social stability as groups both inside and outside of China are plotting to help Tibet win independence.
