Former Japanese prime minister Yukio Hatoyama has called on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to make greater efforts to avoid a military confrontation over the nation's nuclear program.Hatoyama was on a 4-day visit to Iran in a personal capacity. He met Ahmadinejad in Teheran on Sunday.
Hatoyama  quoted the president as saying that Iran will propose a realistic solution to the current standoff at talks with 5 UN Security Council permanent members countries and Germany to be resumed in Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters after the talks, Hatoyama said he told the president how Japan has managed to win the trust of the international community over the past 50 years as a country which has the technical capability to develop nuclear weapons but has chosen not to have any such weapons.

Hatoyama said he asked the president to continue with efforts to hold dialogue to dispel any suspicions that Iran may be trying to develop nuclear weapons.
