The Moscow talks including the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany (5+1) ended on Tuesday. EU foreign policy Chief Catherine Ashton headed up the Group 5+1 delegation and Iran's team of negotiators was headed by Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Secretary Saeed Jalili. On Monday, Catherine Ashton said that the talks in Moscow were more constructive than previous talks in Baghdad had been.
Six world powers and Iran have however failed to achieve any major breakthrough in negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program. But the door is still open for future talks. Two day meeting in Moscow ended on Tuesday. hence the negotiators agreed to meet again in Istanbul, Turkey, from July 3rd for technical discussions.
In the third round of talks that resumed in April, US and European negotiators urged Iran to stop enriching uranium to 20 percent. It is a level that could bring Iran closer to acquiring weapons-grade material.
Iran had insisted Western powers recognize its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes before discussions could start. The negotiators failed to iron out differences, even though they managed to avoid collapse of the talks. The head of Iran's delegation, Saeed Jalili, said the world community must acknowledge that Tehran has the right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes and called for sanctions against the Islamic Republic be removed."It is crucial to emphasize that Iran has the right to the peaceful enrichment of uranium...But we are, however, expect that the measures taken against Iran will be removed," Jalili said after the two-day round ended in Moscow.
A lack of concrete results in curbing Iran's nuclear development will likely lead the United States and the European Union to impose fresh sanctions against Iran's crude oil exports at the end of June to July 1st.
The talks bring together the United States, Britain, Russia, China, France, Germany and Iran.
